It's a pleasure to have you in class. If you are like me, I was quite apprehensive about how I would succeed in my college speech class many years ago. Let me assure you - you'll love the class and you'll discover that you'll gain more confidence for all of your oral presentations during your college career. Your responsibility from the start is to be committed to hard work and to concentrate on developing your skills. Do all of the required assignments and you'll do well. Again, welcome to our CAS 100 class - I eagerly await a great semester.

BLOGGING IS DUE BY FRIDAY @ 5:00 PM FOR FULL CREDIT. DISCUSSIONS TO INCLUDE TEXTBOOK READING ASSIGNMENTS, CLASS LECTURES, YOUR EXPERIENCES IN SPEAKING, AND RESPONSES TO YOUR PEERS. GOOD LUCK.
How long does the blog have to be?
Blog : I have experience with talking in front of a class. I took speech class my junior year in highschool. I didn't mind getting up in front of the class and talking. We did many different types of speeches. It is good to know that we will have a lot of time to learn and prepare our speeches. I enjoyed getting the outline you passed out in class. This allows me to make sure my speech is successful.
In chapter three Building Presentation Confidence it tells you many different types of reasons why you may be scared to speak in public, and they are ture. The fear of being in the spotlight I belive is the most nerve racking, becasue all eyes are on you and nobody else. The book teaches to look at friendly faces in the class, that way you will be less self conscious about yourself. It was interesting to know that between 75 and 85 percent of the U.S. population experience presentation anxiety. If you prepare your speech properly, and have an intersting topic that you enjoy talking about, it should make you less anxious and more likely able to deliver a good speech. The triangle of terror represents three interacting components of presentation anxiety and how it affects your head, heart, and habits. Some strategies to transfrom your triangle are in your head to visualiz, adapt, and focus. For your heart you should try physical relaxation, systematic desensitization, and share your fears. Finally, Habbits are preperation of skills, delivery skills, and practice. With all of this information hopefully I will be able to prepare and deliver a well organized and well thought out speech.
Throughout high school I gained alot of experience getting up infront of groups of people and giving presentations. It seemed that last year in all but a couple of my classes, I was required to give an oral presentation. Through these assignments I learned how to gather information and compose it into a presentation which I then present.
I for the most part do not get nervous or anything like that when I give speeches. I have however seen many people that suffer from some of the symptoms that are givin in Chapter 3. It was sort of amazing to me after reading chapter 3 how complex presentation anxiety is. According to the research more people suffer from presentation anxiety than those who do not. Another thing that was interesting to me was the catagories that are associtated with presentation anxiety, such as the "BIG SIX" sources of presentation anxiety. Not only did Chapter 3 talk about what presentation anxiety is and how it affects people, it also talks about ways to overcome this form of anxiety, and how to become a more confident, relaxed speaker.
Hello everyone. My name is Carrie White and I am a first year student. I am currently pursuing a degree in Business Admin. & Mgmt. I expect next year to be not only pursuing this degree but also working to obtain a degree as an R.N, so that one day my dream of owning and operating my own Nursing Home will then become a relaity.
When I too was a junior in high school I had to take a speech class. I will honestly say that I was nervous and dreading going to the speech class. When it was time for my first speech, I actually shook a tiny bit.
When I started to speak, I then began to relax. After I spoke a few more times, I had almost started to enjoy public speaking but this was only in front of my class. I then had realized that the real world would be completely different.
While taking this class I plan on improving my speaking skill dramatically. This is essential in any field. I hope other people have the same goal of improving their skills somewhat.
hello, my name is Josh Salter. This is my first semster attending Dubois. I went to Behrend before coming here. I am a member of the basketball team as well. I am a business major, and I live in St. Marys.
I have pretty good experience with talking in front of a group of people. I took a speach class in high school and did very well. In chapter three the book discusses different fears that go along with speaking. I know that I have fears and bad habbits that I need to overcome. Being well prepared is a flaw I see in many people when they are speaking. I have that problem as well.
Blog: Public speaking isn't really a strong suit of mine. To be completely honest, it's a glaring weakness that I need to address. Even though I do a lot of research into the subject that I'm giving my speech on and practice my speech several times before I actually present, I can't get over the fact that everyone's attention is focused on me. It's nerve-racking to say the least. I can't help but feel as if I'm at an AC/DC concert, and hell's bells are tolling for me.
It's actually quite comforting to learn that about 3 of 4 people feel the same way I do about giving a presentation. Merely knowing that fact should help with the "pre-speech" jitters that I have become so accustomed to. The book talked about the "triangle of terror" and how it relates to presentation anxiety, along with ways to calm yourself down while giving a speech. I plan on using some of these methods, and hopefully earning a quality grade in this class.
Blog...
In high school, I had experience with speeches during English classes and my Senior project. Presentation speaking was something that wasn't overly emphasized in most of my classes. From the audio tapes and the reading, I learned about one major mistake that I had made for all of my previous speeches. Before I always tried to memorize my speech word for word, which makes it even less interesting for the audience. Research and organizing information is one thing that I haven't had much trouble with in the past, but like most other people I have trouble actually presenting it in front of peers. Like several other people have blogged about before, Chapter 3 was very informative about speech anxiety and trying to build confidence.
In chapter one gave a very easy to understand and detailed explanation about how to be sensitive to one's audiences culture. This chapter also helped me realize how important it is to pay attention to how one puts uses their words. I did like some of the examples of not paying attention to the culture diversity and how it has made an impact on the audience. However, I did not like at the end of the chapter where the writers of the book were pushing the National Communication Association (NCA). I can understand why. The reason why I did not care to much for them to focused on the NCA, and pushing the students to only believe in what they say. I am a believer in everyone has their own choices and should not be forced into believing or following any kind of path that they do not want to.
After reading a section on in chapter three i came to realize that it sounded a lot like what one does during meditation. During meditation one may take themselves out of the environment that they are in. From practicing meditation I know it takes time to develop the skills to remove yourself for a place mentally, and in the book they made it sound like anyone can have the skill to metal remove themselves. The reason why not every can remove themselves mental is because not everyone has control over their thoughts and mind.
After reading chapter eight-teen I found the value step more interesting than the information before it. What I understood from reading this section is that the value step deals with the speaker having more interactions with their audience. Also it is like story time with a point behind the story.
I forgot my name its Jessica Glaister
When i was freshman in high school i took a speech class. It was with all juniors and seniors and i was the only freshman in the whole class,so at first I was kind of intimidated because I was the only freshman in there. The teacher explained to us how to deal with the different kinds of fear and how to relax while giving a speech. My first presentation was an informative speech just like the first one we have due. The speech was to be between 4 and 6 minutes. I was really nervous and scared when it was my turn to give my speech. After the first speech I realized that it wasn't so bad. The following speeches were a piece of cake. I gained a lot of experience taking the speech class and I learned a lot. I feel that I am a better speaker now, because of that class.
Thank you for your first weekly responses. Jessica, you may have a topic for your informative speech if you are interested in meditation. The National Communication Association is simply an organization where experts in the field can set standards for what is considered acceptable for the discipline. It is not unlike the National English Association or the various organizations for the many subject areas we study.
Many of you have illustrated how your fear for public speaking is lessened when you realize how others in your class think. Remember you are not alone in this. I am confident that if you do the tasks outlined in this course, you will end up delivering a speech you can be proud to show others (you will be doing a video of your speeches). Good Luck
I never had to take a speech class until I got into college. I did however, do a presentation for my senior project in high school. I wasn't too afraid to get up and speak in front of people, because I knew all the people in my class. I was actually more worried about the grade I was going to get on my presentation.
Now that I'm in college, and basically seeing new people in every class, I think I'm going to be nervous giving my first speech. I'm also more concerned about coming up with a topic to talk about for my speechs. I am, though, looking forward to facing this small fear and being able to speak in front of people.
Hello Everyone! My name is Clifton Goss i am from Clearfield and this is my 3rd semester at PSU. Looking forward to working with you all this semester!
Blog: I have done allot of public speaking both in high school and in the classes here at PSU, and the idea of getting up in front of people does not bother me at all! I am looking forward to learning how to properly develop a speech however i a struggle in finding a topic that will interest the class and keep your attention for the whole 6-7 mins. I have not had the experience of working with the evaluations and i am sure this will help me find a topic that interest you all! In listen to the first of the tapes it seams that there are a lot of the restrictions on the topics that we can speak on.
I have had many experiences getting up and talking to large groups of people. In high school it was required to give speeches in classes such as english and history. I must say that i have impoved since my first speech, but I know there is much room for improvement.
After reading through chapter 3 i was really able to relate to it. It stated about giving speeches and some of the fears that come with it. I feel that i experience some of these problems and look forward to improving upon my skills.
Blog: I have decent amount of experience in public speaking. Although I only had a nine week period of speech class, I had other various presentations. I dreaded going to the class all the time. To this day I still hate going in front a group with a presentation. Most of my presentations in the past delt with me speaking in front of my high school class mates that I already knew and felt comfortable around for the most part. I hope this class will solidify my presentation giving qualities and eliminate the anxiety that comes with presenting.
I have a lot of experience with public speaking. I took a speech class in high school and have given numerous speeches at a few banquets and in a few college courses. It has become apparent to me that practicing speeches many times before giving the speech helps more than anything. Most people get nervous before giving speeches but I have come to find that the more times I have to give speeches the less nervous I am. The seven principles listed in chapter one are pretty much the factors that have to be thought about before giving any presentation. I feel that adapting to the audience is also very crucial as stated in chapter 3 of the book.
My name is Kevin Neal and I graduated from Punxsutawney High School last year. I am currently a member of the Penn State Dubois basketball team and while at Dubois I am majoring in Human Health and Development until I transfer to University Park where I will then take up Kinesiology as my major
Hello, My Name is Logan Yeager. I Graduated from United Jr./Sr. High School located in the small town of Armagh Pennsylvania. Basically its halfway between Johnstown and Indiana. I am here for two years before i transfer to either University Park or Erie for a degree in an undecided field of Engineering.
When I was in high school I didn't have to take any speech classes but we did give speeches regularly in most of my english classes. I found that as a freshman I was horrified to give speeches in front of an audience but as I became more adjusted to it and continued to give them regularly I lost my anxiety. I still get somewhat nervous and am prone to speed through my presentation, and I need to learn to make better eye contact with my audience. But I've found with practice I can stop that. I was suprised when I read chapter 3 on how some people can become such recks at just the thought of giving a speech in front of a group of people. I hope that this class will help me get over any remaining fears i may have of giving speeches.
I have never taken a speech class in high school, but I do have public speaking experience. I was the 2006-2007 Cambria County Dairy Princess. During that time, I had to give numerous speeches to audiences of all ages. I mainly had to give speeches to people in Cambria County, but I did have to give some speeches at the state level. In chapter 4, it talks about the purpose and topic of a speech. The speeches I had to give all had to deal with the dairy industry. This made my speech topics easy for me.
this will be a new experience for me. it has been a long time since i have had to give a presentation to a group. I do understand that it is a very important part of the business world so I am somewhat excited to learn the proper way to give a presentation. Naturally I feel a bit of anxiety about the first speech but Im sure they will get easier with practice. In reading through the text I found the section on Rhetoical devices (chapter 12)in particular Antithesis (the balanced pairing of opposites)very interesting.
When I was in high school for my english class I had to give a speech in front of the room, wow! needless to say my knees was knocking together and my palms were very sweaty so it wasn't a good experence. I also had to give a speech for my senior project as well as provinding a paper for what I did on my project, this speech was better because I only had four people in the room with me. Relaxing for speeches is a very hard task to do, all of your audrenaline is pumping through your body. Through this class I'm hoping that these experiences with speeches will be a lot better and that I can start to enjoy speaking in front of a bigger crowd. When I was in Equine Dentistry school my instructor who also was a Veterinarian said if your knees knock while talking in front of people remember you are the expert, maybe that type of thinking can work for this class.. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Students. There have been too many absenses during the first two weeks of class. I need to draw your attention to this because in order to survive in CAS100, you will have to be in class. As per the syllabus, you are permitted three absenses. I would strongly suggest that you reevaluate your commitment to this class. It is my desire that each of you succeed in your Communication's Class. Let me ask you. Have you completed the following yet? If not, you are behind:
1. Have you read these chapters? 1,4,5,12,13,18,20, 9, 10, 14,15,16 which are all due by Friday? Also have you completed the reading and worksheets in the OCSTP? Pages 1,5,27-28,59-62,47-48,22-24. Be sure by Friday, Jan. 25th to complete all the reading and worksheets - along with the audio tapes specific to those chapters. The blog (two or more paragraphs) is due each Friday by 5:00 PM. This Friday is the STRUCTURING QUIZ to be given by Dr. Mino. Keep in contact with me while I am away. GOOD LUCK. Dr. Pamela pbd104@psu.edu
Blog: In Chapter 14 it talks about performances and practice. The word performance refers to the effective vocal and physical delivery of your presentation. There are four different ways to deliver a speech; impromptu, extemporaneous, manuscrip, and memorized. Also, having note cards can help in a speech becasue you can mark it up and deciding when you should add pauses, speaker faster, slower, or smilte.
Practice is very important before giving a speech. It not only allows you to know your speech better, but you wont be as nervous about screwing up and forgetting your speech. Three methods to practice before giving your speech are; practicing in private, on a tape, or with otheres. Practicing in private allows you to decide what volume you need your voice at and the reate you should deliver your speech. With audio taping it will tell you how clearly you are speaking, also you can use a video camera and see how well you have eye contact. Finally, practicing with others can help becasue they can tell you what you are doing right and wrong.
They say practice makes perfect, well by practicing your speech it will allow you to deliver a good speech and be more confident while doing it.
Blog Listening lecture: When
I am listening to a speech, delivery has to be the most important thing to me. The way people approach others with their words can describe alot about them. The way they "come off" talking to the audience can really make or break the speaker.
When they seem to be in a foul mood or you can tell that they don't want to give the presentation, the audience then doesn't want to listen. They then have a bad impression of you even though you didn't intend it to. Delivery is almost or is the same thing as approachability, which is described as a person being able to walk up to another person and they aren't afraid of being put down or yelled at. People need to be approachable and a speaker has to have a good delivery.
Blog: In chapter 14 the book talks about the actual speech and how you practice for the speech. There are four different types of speeches. They are impromptu, memorized, extemporaneous, and manuscript. For every speech you give it is crucial that you prepare for the speech. I find that this is often what people don't do when they are getting ready to speak in front of people. There are a couple ways to practice. You can practice by yourself. By doing this you allow yourself to hear your speech more clearly, and you are able to determine the rate at which you should be delivering it. Also you could practice in front of an audience or in camera. By doing this you can be critiqued or critique yourself. To prepare for a speech it is always a good idea to have note cards. Not necessarily to read off of but to have in case you get stuck in the middle of your speech. By doing the following preparations there is no reason why you cannot be successful while speaking in front of an audience.
Blog 2nd Week
Chapter 16 goes in depth about physcial appearance while giving a speech, something that I had been drilled on in high school. Eye contact is a very important aspect of speaking to an audience. I notice it more when I've witnessed speeches previously, but eye contact is something that affects a viewer's thoughts on the speech. You don't take people as seriously if they're constantly looking down or staring at one spot. Posture also helps give the audience views on your credibility and whether or not your speech is worth listening to.
Chapter 15 touches on one of my pet peeves, pronunciation and other related speech problems that occur very often in Western Pennsylvania.
After reading the chapters, i found chapter 15 to be interesting. I didn't know that it was important to develope a speaking voice. Your breathing, volume, rate, pitch, and fluency are all main points to focus on during a speech. This helps you to emphasize what you are saying and to help catch the audience's attention. They state that it's important for a speaker to stay away from being monotone. You could practice these things by talking in front of a mirror and focus on listening and watching your lips as you speak.
Also, i found out that along with your speaking voice comes your clarity and correctness. It is very important to state your words and phrases properly. Pronouncing your words clearly is vital for the understanding of your audience.
2nd week blog:
I found chapter sixteen Physical Delivery interesting because I did not know that there were so many different way one has to learn to be able to give a good physical delivery. I knew that eye contact, and posture was important, however I did not know that the facial expressions, gestures, and movement was important too. When I gave speeches in the past I never paid any attention to the facial expression, gestures, and movement, but I am sure that we all notice the mood of the audience, and our face probably shows the mood of the audience. By using gestures and movement in your speech would keep the audience interested.
In chapter 15 was also interesting with all the components of having a clear and effective voice. I do understand how import your voice is, for example trying to lead someone through a workout you cannot leave out one detail, but also have to be clear and sometimes comforting.
I think that your body movements and voice are very important, but having an organized speech would be the most important. By having an organized speech one would have confidence in their speech, and the voice quality and physical delivery. I do think having an organized speech is the most import quality for a good speech.
My Name is Jessica Glaister
Students: REMINDER. Please respond to each other's blogs also. Do not simply review a chapter, discuss situations that relate to the chapter. Also, respond to 1-2 other blogs. We need to get this blog site to be more interactive.
Blog 2nd week....I agree with many students that preparation of a speech is very important along with confidence when giving the speech. But i also feel that movement and facial expressions are also very important. In order to have a good speech, make a good delivery, and get your point across movement and facial expressions. The audience will take in consideration the way you move and the way you express your option. If you go up there and act like a robot the audience will not get what your are point is, but if you have good movements and good facial expresssions the audience will be more into your speech and pay more attention to what you have to say. That is what i feel makes a powerful speech. If anybody agrees or disagrees please blog back.
Blog 2:
I found many useful things within chapter 15 and 16. The vocal characteristics that are listed in chapter 15 are very crucial in delivering a good speech. If your voice is clear and smooth you will usually have the audiences attention. If you possess these five characteristics, which are breath, volume, rate, pitch and fluency, you will have a smooth delivery. I also agree that having an effective breath pattern will make a better overall speech. If you are able to state a lot of information within one breath it will cause the audience to focus more on what you are saying. The quality and volume of your voice may be the two most important vocal characteristics.
I thought chapter 16 expressed many crucial points about gestures. Gestures are a very important if they are the right kind. If someone is moving his or her hands around to much it can become distracting and make the audience lose focus. I also have noticed in my speech experiences that it is very easy to move around a lot. I found that the best way to stop that is to either hold onto a small item in one hand or to just focus on not moving around a lot.
Blog 2:
I noticed some useful ideas and strategys while reading through chapter fifteen and sixteen. Chapter fifteen displays the importance of vocal charactoristics such as breath, volume, rate, pitch, and fluency. A good listening voice could possibly make or break a speech. A student could have a perfectly formatted speech with interesting details to be presented, but if the speeker presents the entire speech in monitone chances are there will be a lot of people not listening as closly as they should. Of course speaking loudly and prounouncing your words clearly is key as well. If you speak loud it may catch the audiences attention more easily. Putting different emphasis on certain parts of words can also be an attention getter, if done well. Taping yourself is a very solid practice strategy to get all of the voice components the way you want them.
Chapter sixteen focuses on the importance of your physical delivery such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, and posture. An excellent practice strategy for these aspects of presenting would be speaking in front of your mirror until you accomplished the performance that satisfys you the most. This practice could help you gain confidence in going in front of the class because you know exactly how you will physically present. You need to show your audience that you are interested in the topic by physically getting into the speech you are presenting. Also, if something in your speaking ability is weak you could make up for the bad by complimenting them with physical deliverys.
I agree with Jimmy that if you act like a robot no one will get what your real point is. But how would you know what is the right amount of physical body movement is or the right facial expressions? Is it something that one should decided before or after they start giving their speech?
I Agree with many of the previous statements about how S person should go about presenting a speech. Each individual needs to bring their own flare to their presentation as to keep the attention of the audience. What ive gotten from reading the book thus far is that there are some general rules you must take into consideration when giving a speech. Things such as being sensitive to different cultures and beliefes, and even making sure that its a topic that can effect or have an impact on everyone in the audience are main keys of focus when giving a speech. Failure to do so can result in members of your audience becoming angry with you or bored with you. If the audience is either or both than thats when you start to notice people coughing loudly and not really paying any respect because you dont have their attention any longer.
Blog: After reading the chapters and also reading through some of the blogs posted, I have to agree with what people say. Performance is a key part when trying to make an impression. Whenever you play a sport, performance is key to keeping a job and also winning games. In speech, performance will help drive your key idea across so people will remember what you were talking about.
The most important part of performance would have to be confidence in what you're saying. If you don't sound like you support your idea, then the audience won't want to really listen to what else you'll have to say. One other part of performance is don't say "uh, or umm." That gives away that you aren't prepared for your speech, or you aren't confident behind what you're saying.
with the president's state of the union address coming up I cant help but wonder which residual message he will be pushing the most, there seems to be a lot of issues which need to be addressed including the economy, the war, global warming, as well as energy efficiency. In ch 13 there is a paragraph about how all humans respond to stories, how they have the power to captivate and educate. Often times politicians use stories to make themselves seem more in touch with the people. I wonder if the president will do this on monday.
Blog: Performace is very important in a speech. In Chapter 14 it talks about Performaces and Practice. There are different forms of presentation delivery such as; Impromptu, extemporaneous, manuscript, and memorized. Making note cards is very important in giving your speech. They help you deliver a good speech. When you write your speech on a note card there are different symbols that hlep you speak such as short pauses, long pauses, speak louder, smile or speak slowly. These all help you deliver a good speech.
Finally, there are three differnet ways you can practice your speech. First, there is practice in private. By practicing in private you can listen to your voice and decide how you want your self to sound. Practice on tape will help you clarify your words. You can also record yourself becasue you can see how good of eye contact you give to the class. Finally, practicing with others will help you because they will be able to tell you what you are doing right, and how you sound.
Mike Weisner is blogging EXACTLY as I hope others will eventually do. Please do not summarize your chapters but rather REACT to them. Also INTERACT with one another as you are expected to create a give-and-take discussion and response here. Good going Mike!!! I'm giving you bonus points! But please extend your blog a bit - two paragraphs. Thanks
Blog 2:
I found a few things that stuck out from the readings we had to read. In chapter 15 I thought it was interesting that people are supposed to have a speaking voice. I did not know that breathing is an important part in giving a speech. It makes sense that you have to have a good breathing rate because if you don't you may seem nervous when you are not. Also it talks about pitch and how important it is for a speech. It is interesting how you can vary your pitch to make emphasis on different parts in a speech.
In chapter 13, it talks about how telling a story can help to generate interest in an audience. I had teachers before that would tell a story to go along with the lesson. I thought it was a good addition to a speech or a lecture. If the audience is not interested, nobody will be listening, just hearing the words you are saying.
Also, I agree with Brad who said that if something in your speaking ability is weak you could make up for the bad by complimenting them with physical delivery. Everyone is not going to be the best at everything. I think it is important to use your skills to the best of your ability.
Third week blog:
In the real world delivery is key. If you are at a job interview and you start coming off the wrong way you will not be asked for that position. The same goes for when you're in class or on the street just saying hi to somebody. Has anybody offended somebody while just talking to them?
Everywhere you go how you present yourself and how you say things can tell a person how your personality is. I work at Elk Regional Health Center and everywhere I go I have to watch exactly how I say things to a patient. People get upset very easily if they feel your being rude or just by saying a word to sarcastically. Does anybody agree or disagree with me?
Blog 3: Organization is something that we all deal with. Some of us may be better at it than others. Organization helps you in being able to find things where you put them last or being able to prepare something and be very confident in it. Also, organization makes things much more clear! For instance in school if you are organized, up on your school work, and know when things are due you will have an easier time than someone who is always doing things at the last minute. You can incorporate organization into yoru speech so you then can deliver it more clearer and it will end up making more secne.
There are four R's you should use when writing your speech. The first R is Review. Review collect your ideas and keeping going over them until you are satisfied with what you got, next is reduce. When you reduce you take all the information you have and make them into key points. Regroup is taking your speech and putting the information into different categories. Finally, Refine is finishing your work, doing over those last minute details. So if you apply yourself and use the four R's you should deliver a well written and organized speech.
Blog 3: Teachers are very good at vocal deliverary becasue they know how to catch the audiences attention. When the teacher wants us to pay attention to what she is saying she may raise her voice.
There are some vocal characteristics to your voice such as breath, volume, rate, pitch, and fluency. These all are importnat characteristics to have in your voice. While having the ability to speak clearly you will be able to present a good and clear speech that everyone can hear and understand.
Organization is very important in school, but organization is also very important in life. If you are unorganized in life then i feel your life will be hectic. Nothing will ever get done on time or be done right. Kristin has some very good points about organization for school and for speeches and i agree with her that if your speech isnt organized, your message will not be delivered correctly. I also feel that life is based on organization and in order to be successful you have to be organized. Without organization life would be just one big blur..
Organization is something that i feel is key to an oral presentation. From reading the chapters and from personal experience i can conclude that good organization is what makes a speech understandable to the audience to which it is intended. Good performance in your presentation only enhances a good organizational pattern. Being able to fluently express your ideas to your audience in a fashion that everyone can understand will make things easier on yourself and easier on your audience. So basically i feel being able to have a good combination of organization and performance will make for a good speechm given the information is credible and makes sense.
Blog 3
I agree with Brandon about the way a person says things is very important in showing others what kind of personality that person has. Many people get the wrong idea if you try to joke with them over the wrong subjects. When working with the public, speaking skills are very very important in pleasing customers.
There are many parts that are important in making a successful speech. Organization is key. Without it, the audience would quickly lose interest in anything the speaker is saying.
I agree with Kristin when she talks about organization. I feel that the key to success in any job or in life in general is to be well organized. This process helps u become more independant. I consider myself an organized person and it has helped me through school and especially through my first semester of college. In CAS 100, I feel that organization is the key to pass and keep up to date with your speeches.
While giving a speech, there are certain characteristics that you must have to give a fluent speech. They would be breath, volume, rate, pitch, and fluency. These are all very important when giving a speech. This allows you to sound confident and gives your audience a good clear understanding of what you are giving a speech about.
Third weeks blog:
I do agree with kristin and Jimmy about how organization does play a rule in school and life. I do believe that there is more to being organized with school and life and that is responsibility. I will say right now I am one of the most disorganized people that are but I do take all the responsibility for all my actions. Also I do get almost all of my work done on time.
As for what Brandon said about how he has to watch what he says while he is at work. Americans' in general have to watch what and how they do say things. We are living in a time of sexism. Many Americans can be offended easily by stereotyping.

In chapter 9 under how to get organized I thought the paragraphs about framing were very helpful. It used the word framing to compare the organization process to that of bulding a house. This analogy seemed to stick for me. It talked about first considering your purpose, then your audience, then your credibility, then occasion and logistics.
Along with the other students I beleive my biggest problem with college is organization. It seems hard sometimes to just put away a project and start another just because thats all the time you can spare for that project. Unfortunately creativity isn't like a switch you can just turn on and off. Sometimes you have to choose between which project or class has more signifigance and thats unfortunate.
Blog 3:
Kristin makes a valid point with saying how organization is essential to having a successful life. The book only goes into being organized for a speech, but organization ties into our everyday lives.
I know that I've forgotten a lot of assignments at home because I wasn't organized when I left for school. Now I'm hoping to become more organized in the future, because I really don't want to be at my job and forget an important document. That would most likely end up costing my job. So the chapter actually has a hidden means behind being organized.
Blog 3:
I agree with what Mike has to say about chapter 9 about being organized. I think that when something is compared like organization is to building a house, it sticks in your mind better. Also in chapter 9, I found that getting organized has four R's : review , reduce, regroup , and refine. It is important to get to the point you want to make in a speech. If you ramble on about useless information, you may loose the attention of your audience.
In chapter 10, it describes how an outline is used as an organizational tool. I think that making an outline before you write a speech is very helpful and that it can help you to organize the things you want to say in your speech. I think that being more organized it will help to make your speech better. Making an outline is something that I always use when I have to make a speech. I am able to put down all the main points that I want to include in my speech, that way I know I won't forget them.

CONGRATULATIONS. The blogs are sounding much better and I appreciate your attempts to interact with one another. Don't be afraid to step out of the box. You can also relate real-life events to what you are reading in the text. It's always valuable to synthesize what we are learning. Have a great weekend and a good week. I miss you all! Write if you have any questions!
Organizagtion is very important when it comes to speeches. In life there are two different kinds of people: organzied and unorganized. The organized people always know when things are do and always know where they put their stuff, unorgainzed people on the other hand dont always know what is going on.
I play basketball and in order for us to play offense and defense we needs organization. We have different plays that we go by to score points. So just like in basketball, speech is also a place for organziation. When we organzie our speeches they seem to be more clear and to the point. Organiziation helps the audience understand the message, remember the message, and decide how to react. With these tips you should be able to deliver a well organized speech.
I agree with Danny in that there are two types of organization. Organization is very important in any field no matter what your doing. In my job organization is very important because that is really the only way that i can get anything accomplished. I have like 10 things to do at once, so i just organize what is most important first and then what is the least important. Without organization nothing would ever get done and i would just have a big mess.
Organization is also very important in speech. I agree with Jennifer that if you make an outline it will help you out a lot. It will not only help you in building a speech but also in the deliverying the speech as well. Organization helps the audience stay focused on what you are talking about. If you did a speech and werent organized you would be jumping from topic to topic which would be just a huge waste of time for both you and your audience.
ORGANIZATION. Once you understand how to structure and organize your speech, you can literally deliver it without reading it. NEVER read your speech. You lose eye contact with your audience. Once you have a visual picture of your structured speech, you can easily move on from one point to another without a major problem. Using note cards are recommended so that you can accurately quote your sources and to remind yourself what is up next in your speech. DO NOT WRITE THE SPEECH OUT ON YOUR CARDS. Write only quotes and reminders. By the way, did I tell you that you will be doing a video of your speech? After your speech is completed, you will evaluate yourself. If you have video on your cell phones that will work fine. Have someone video your speech. It's the best way to critique oneself. OK GOOD LUCK EVERYONE. See you on the 22nd! Dr. Pamela

in chapter 11 there is a section about situation specific methods. I beleive that this part deals specifically with our introduction speech. after all we are all in this class for alot of the same reasons. in the paragraphs it speaks about adapting your introduction to the characteristics of the audience. this would seem that your audience analysis questionairres would be invaluable for achieving this. it also discusses establishing a personal link between you and the audience. Since were all in college for the most part to improve our own situations, I dont think it should be to hard to establish atleast some common ground here.
blog 4
I partially agree with Mike about the situation specific methods. The intoductory speech does tie in nicely because we all are in college obviously but why are we all here? Do we all have the same goals. This is why we do need audience analysis. We all have different views, goals, and opinions.
If everybody was the same then we wouldn't need this class or most of our other classes. Yet we are taking them because everybody has their own train of thought and own opinions or reasons for being here. That is why situation specific methods work to an extent in my opinion.
The questionnaires are used for our benefit to help us write our speeches and o get to know our audience better. The questionnaires are used to see how much our audience knows about the subject that we want to talk about. Also the questionnaires show some of the characteristics of the audience.
What i found interesting in chapter 11 was the part about how to use humor in your own speech. I do not think jokes are that great and I do not use them in my personal life. However, I can see why people may to use jokes are the start of their speech. Using humor can relax you and your audience . Also I think by telling jokes it more like story telling.
Jessica glaister
I agree with the previous statements. We are all in the class for generally the same reason. All of us at one point or another need to know how ot effectively communicate to others no matter what career path we are choosing. Being able to convey that information effectively will make life easier because we wont have to repeat ourselves.
The questionaires are a good way of achieving common ground between you and your audience. Knowing what the audience thinks of what you are going to say provides a background of what they know and dont know and if they want to know anything at all about what you would like to talk about. That in return makes the speech itself easier because you can make it out to be interesting to the audience and you know what may or may not keep their attention.
In response the Humor in your introduction, i personally like it when people use the humor becuase it makes for a good ice breaker should there be any type of tension or uneasy feeling between the audience and the speaker. getting the room to loosen up and laugh makes for a much more relaxed environment in my opinion.
I believe the questionaires are very valuable. We do have different thoughts and we can't just be stuborn and do a speech our way when its made to inform the class. The questionaires are to help us understand what the rest of the class thinks and how much they are interested in this topic. We don't want to bore them to death, that would be a bad thing. Knowing other peoples trains of thought will help us understand that the way we think and feel isn't the same as the person sitting next to us or across the room.
Another thing was the chapter on orginization. I found it very helpful. I am unorganized most of the time, but when it comes down to the wire with school work I've found that organizing saves my life pretty much. I know what i need to do first because it's most important right down to the last thing. This way i don't have a giant pile of papers and have no clue as to where to start.
Blog 4: Our audeience analysis is very important for our Informative speech. We need to get feed back from our other classmates on what they are interested in, or how this topic deals with their life situaitons. We can related to one another better if we know what each others interests/dislikes are.
In chapter 11 Jessica brings up a good point when she talks about humor in a speech. Humor is very important becasue it relaxes you and your audience. Also, you know your audience is paying attention if they laugh or comment about the joke, so a joke is a good thing to stick into your speech.
I completely agree with Mike in the sense that we are all in this class for pretty much the same reasons, and that we should not have trouble finding common ground. In chapter 11 I found that the section Introductions as Mini-Presentations seems like it would be very helpful when giving a presentation. It states that focusing audience attention may be the most important goal for the beginning of a presentation. I never really thought about it, but that seems like a very logical point. It then says that one of the best ways to capture your audience's attention is to relate your purpose to the audience's characteristics, motives, interests needs and attitudes. I found this strategy to be one that was very interesting and which also seems like it would be very functional.
Throughout the chapter it gives numerous more strategies to improve presentations. One of the strategies pertains to how you can put you into your presentation to make it more interesting. Another strategy deals with setting the emotional tone of your presentation, this can be changed and created by the tone of your voice and the language that you use. The last strategy mentioned deals with previewing your message. It states to use the beginning of your presentation to give your audience a sneak preview about the subject of your talk. I beleive that all of the strategies given throughout chapter 11 seem like very good ideas that could greatly improve one's presentation.
I definitly agree with what Jimmy and Danny both said about organization. Organizing your speech is one of the most important things a speaker must do. Without organization it is all just a bunch of well thought out ideas jumbled together. There is no flow to the speech and the points that are trying to be made are no longer clear.
Like Danny said about basketball, when running an offense you need to execute and be organized. If we as a team are not organized than the play being run gets all jumbled and messy. Then we cannot execute properly. It's the same way when executing your speech.
Our audience analysis are very important just like everyone else has already said. They allow you to know more about what your audience is interested in and also what subjects they might not find interesting. They are good feedback to get for yourself when beginning to prepare a speech.
Audience analysis is something that is very important for our class. They can help us to identify what the audience knows about the topic you selected.Things that affect the questions you ask include: who are they, why they are here, what do they know, what are their interests, what are their attitudes. By doing the research about your audience, you can make your speech better adapted. This information is form chapter 5.
All of the information in this chapter is very useful for us. I agree with Kristen, in that we can related to one another better if we know what each others interests and/or dislikes are.
Audience analysis is very important to giving a good speech. Lucky for us, the whole class is basically are college students. This will help narrow down questions so you can focus more on a topic. Audience analysis will help greatly when it comes to developing what you're going to say in your speech. I know I don't want to hear someone talk about something I already know. Audience analysis will help you stay clear of that when you find out that most of the class already know about something.
From playing sports, knowing that the team knows how to run this play gave us more time to practice another. This helped us greatly so we didn't have to waste time running a play we knew already. Same also goes into a normal conversation. If you're talking to someone, you don't want to talk about something they already know. Well you could, but I'm sure the conversation wouldn't last very long.
Hello students! Well I will be back on Friday, Feb. 22nd providing it is not another snow day! Hope you are using the day off to catch up on reading and planning.
Ok - about your introductory speeches: Be prepared on the 22nd to do the introductory speeches. This will be a great opportunity to practice being in front of the class. I am really pleased that you seem to be keeping up with most of the work. Now you know, ALL of the AUDIO TAPES have to be finished by the 21st. All quizzes must be completed by the 21st. I will close the site and you won't be able to access it after that date.
About the BLOGS: I can see that you are making an attempt to do as I have asked; however, we will have to talk about lengthier blogs and blogs that really interact with one another beyond the "I agree with Mary" line. Let's really concentrate on using our critical thinking skills to add some stimulating and thought provoking questions to our posts - which in turn will motivate responses from others.
Try not to summarize chapter reading. I realize this is easy to do but what I want to see is that you debate the issues - and relate what you read to real life situations or events.
Although you are doing better at the blogs, it takes some practice to get to the depth that it should be.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY YOUR UPCOMING WEEKEND. Dr. Pamela

while reading chapter 21 on applications I found the section on humorous presentations helpful. In everyones life humor does a wonderful job of picking you up or changing your feelings sometimes almost immeadiatly. It is amazing how you can be in a dull or upset mood and see or hear something funny and it instantly changes your attitude. I think that if you could incorporate a joke or humorous story in the begining of your presentation it would be a great attention getter. Also I read that little humor can help the speaker relax, and anything which can help you relax in front of a group of strangers cant be a bad thing.
After reading the blogs and recent chapters, i agree with mike. If there is one thing in life that can make someone smile, it's a good sense of humor! Humorous presentations can be very impotant and helpful for a speaker. It helps to grab the audience's attention in a good way, while getting your point across. You don't know what kind of day the people in you audience are having. Putting a smile on their face can grab their attention right away. I know if i had the audience smiling and laughing, I would be more comfortable speaking to them. This is definitley a tool i may look to use on one of my presentaions.
Humor is a great thing to have in your daily lives. Humor may also be a great attention getter but what if your audience has a dry sense of humor? How will you adapt your joke or story to them when a joke cannot really be changed or your story cannot be altered or it will diminish its humor.
You must really know your audience to be able to use humor otherwise you might find yourself offending a person or they just don't care for your humor at all especially if your at a somewhat serious presentation like a business meeting. Humor is not a bad thing but you must use it very wisely.
In Chapter 17 they talk the importance of presentatinal aids. Posters or some kind of other aids are great for presentations. They draw the sudiences attention and allow the audience to better understand what your speech is about. In high school for speech class i had to use some form of an aid all the time for my speeches. It not only made it easier for me to do my speech, but made it easier for the audience to follow along and better understand the speech.
I feel that presentational aids are a big part for anybodys speech. They not only help the presenter with their speech, but they also help the audience.
Blog 5: introductions and conclusions are both very important to a speech. Focusing on the audeicnes attention is very important, because you dont want to talk about something that is going to put them to sleep. To deliver a good speech you have to have a topic that everyone will be intersted in. When finishing up your speech a good and memorable conclusion is needed. You should also be clear. Jumping around from subject to subject at the end would just confuse people and prolong the speech. Finally, be brief. Just wrap up what you want to say, make your point. If you have your speech well planed the introduction and conclusion should be easy.
I fell that humor would be best to have in your speech just to keep the audiences attention. The humor should be added to the introduction to catch your audiences attention.
Although I agree with a lot of the people with using humor in speeches, I feel that humor should only be used in certain situations. If you're going to be speaking at an important business meeting, you don't want to use humor because it could be rather unnecessary. Also using humor at a serious event could be a bad time to use humor. I know humor could be good in informal situations and at like school events just to keep everybody comfortable.
Anothey type of aid could be questions. A good question could really get the audiences attention with making them think and trying to understand what is going to happen. A good example would be a speech opening with a question about someone's thoughts with gasoline prices. I know everybody has an opinion because I feel like every day I'm dishing out more money at the pump just so I can get somewhere. Now if someone asked me a question like that, I would pay attention to what he/she would have to say with gasoline and the never-ending price increase.
Humor is something i feel that is sometimes overused in speeches. People sometimes tend to try and turn their speech into a stand up comedy routine. As i presonally like to laugh at peoples jokes i also feel that conveying the information in a civil manner is also something that needs to be practiced. Since i am blogging after class on friday i would also like to state that Mrs. Mino made some things more clear to me that were slightly confusing before. The ideas represented by doing audience analysis and structure sheets are now making much more sense and i feel that they are effective ways of producing a speech that may actually keep the audiences attention.
In a speech a introduction and a conclusion are very important parts of the speech. Having a good introduction is important in order to clearly state what it is you will be talking about with your audience. A good topic that will keep your audiences attention is also very important. Your conclusion should make a statement. It should be something the audience will remember. Be brief and don't jump around with subjects. Also i believe that humor is a big attention getter and it also is a stress reliever for both the speaker and the audiece.
I agree with Jimmy about the importance of presentation aids which are discussed in chapter 17. It tells in the beginning of the chapter how functional presentation aids are. They gain attention, clarify and reinforce ideas, enhance comprehension, and improve efficiency. Presentation aids attract attention, they can convey meanings, and also studies show visual information enhances learning. Visual aids can be play a vital role in a presentation.
There are many different types of presentation aids as well. There are pie charts which show how much. There are graphs which also show how much but are primarily used to demonstrate comparisons. Then there are text charts, tables and diagrams and illusions. The last two types of presentation aids are maps and photographs. There are many differnent types of presentation aids that one can use which will greatly enhance the quality of a presentation.
I agree with Kristin that the introductions and the conclusions are the most important aspecs of ones speech. The introduction is what is supposed to catch the audiences attention and keep them hooked. The conclusion is supposed to sum main topics of your speech up so the audience is reminded of your residual message, which is what your trying to get accross to your audience. Therefore the intoroduction and conclusion are what i believe are most important to ones speech. Also i would like to add that having Doctor Mino attend class today was very helpful and informative.
I agree with Logan in that having Dr. Mino come in definitely cleared some things up. I also think that using the green sheet will help to make a speech flow nicely. I think that it has some good points that should be followed. Some people do not start out with a goood introduction and that could loose the attention of the whole audience. If you do not have the attention of the audience in the beginning I think it would be hard to gain it back.
The conclusion is another part that is very important for a good speech. In a conclusion, you want to tell the audience what you want them to remember. By restating your residual message, it will help to make it stick with your audience.
One thing that will make a speech better is to have a visual aid. By having a visual aid, it could be beneficial to you as well as hurtful in your presentation. You need to explain it and use it to help inform your audience, you do not want to keep all your attention on it because it can be distracting for your audience
I agree with Will about humor and the ways it should be used. There are places where humor should be used and not used. Also I do agree with Will on how the use a questions. By asking a question that would make your audience think would get their attention quickly.
Introductions are important with anything. When writing a paper you want to have a very clear introduction and it would be the same with a speech. For the same reason as a paper.
Introductions are to grasp the attention of your audience and to explain what you are about to discuss. Conclusions are important too. The main point for a conclusions are to sum up the main points.
Jessica Glaister
After reading chapter 22, i have found out that being able to communicate in small groups is very important. Especially in future working experiences we might be faced with. As people work in small groups, the discussions are usually focused on achieving a common goal. For example, a groups focus may be on resolving routine staff issues. That is why it's important for everyone to speak up in the group, that each opinion is heard and that the group works as a team.
The purpose of the group is very important as well. All successfull groups clearly understand the goals they must meet. Each person must ask themselves what they want to achieve as a group. Everyone in the group must agree with the topic at hand.
Blog 6: Danny brought up a very good point about working in groups. They are a good way of individuals expressing themselves, and being able to get feed back from the other people in the class. My major is business management and it is very important to be able to work with other people and be able to disscuss issues and thoughts thoughtout your "team."
Team presentations are a well coordinated, persuasive presentation made by a cohesive group of speakers who aim to influence an audience of key decision-makers. Group presentations are used very much in business meetings by expressing your groups wants and expectations. Group presentations are both easy and challenging because working in a group is nice becasue you can split the work up between each other, but if everyone isn't doing their share of the work than you have to pick up their slack and have much more work for yourself. I belive though that in a group you are more capable to convince people than just you yourself.

I found class on monday to be very helpful as far as clearing up some of the questions I had about giving an informative speech. Having Dr. Minno present an example of one was quite benefical. I had no idea that we were to use the audience analysis that much in our speeches. Chapter 5 deals with audience analysis and defines it as the ability to understand and adapt to listeners. clearly it is important to have your audience atleast somewhat interested in what your talking about and with a proper audience analysis this can certainly be acheived.
I also did find it very helpful with Dr. Minno Explaining things that were unclear to many of the student including myself about how to use audience analysis in your speech. She also made it clear that we need to give speeches about what will help our audience or what they need/ should know about a topic. Like how Mike said the with Dr. Minno being present was very beneficial.
I do agree with Kristin that working with other students and getting their feedback is a good way of learning and changing how you should go about things. Also getting feedback from other students makes you understand what and why you did something wrong. I do believe by working in groups and being able to voice your own opinion. Also that she also mentioned group presentations. Group presentations are much less stressful on anyone because they are not giving a speech in-front of people by themselves but with someone else. By giving a group presentation the speakers may feel less anxiety.
Jessica Glaister
Working in groups is a very good thing for everyone. By doing so you are able to express yourself about a topic, and also you are able to take in informantion from the rest of your group members. Giving a group speech I feel is easier than giving one on your own. I feel comfortable staning in front of a group with people rather than by myself. Also when working in a group you are able to split up the work load and be a lot more cooridinated. However if not everyone in the group is not willing to do their part than chances are the group will fail. By giving a persuasive speech in a group I feel that it is a lot more effecting than a single presentation. For one there are more than one person with the same view point persuading an audience, and each person may be able to give more examples that will support your speech.
Sorry my blog is a day late, but i wasn't able to access a computer friday and i didn't know the camus would be closed or i would have made this blog sooner.
I find that working in groups is easier than giving a speech by yourself. I find it easier because not all of the attention is focused on you when your in a group. And having attention put on people is usually what people are most afraid of. It is also easier to prepare the speech i find, because everyone can add something different to it that will make it sound better usually. The input of different view points is always good to have. I find this is true as long as everyone in the group is willing to work and do their parts.
I would have to agree with Caitlin in that giving a group speech is easier than giving an individual speech. Having different opinions from the group is definitely an advantage. I also agree with her in that it diverts the attention from yourself and it can make you more comfortable when you are in front of a large audience. One disadvantage of working in groups is that you could have uncooperative members. In this case it would not be a good thing to be working in a group. Sometimes you need to do things the way you want to all the time, and in this case, groups would definitely not be the best situation.
In chapter 15, t is talking about ways to have good vocal delivery. Not having good delivery could be very bad when giving a speech. If you are monotoned, it could make it very boring for your listeners. You need to have the right pitch and tone to make your presentation interesting. With pitch , you can vary it to emphasize words that are important for the audience to catch.
Jenifer Veneskey
I agree with Caitlyn and Jennifer that a group speech is easier than doing an individual speech. There is a saying that says "Two heads are better than one," so i feel that when more than one person comes together and works on a partiular subject, the end result is always better. At work we run into problems everyday, so we always are doing some kind of problem solving. I found out that whenever a problem arises if you have to ask for input from somebody else its alwyas better because they might have a different solution that is better than what you had in mind. So working in groups is always better.
I would like to elaborate on Jennifers view of vocal delivery. Jennifer is right if your voice is monotoned your speech can be very boring. THe audience will have a very hard time paying attention to your speech. Also i feel that your vocie has to have the right amount of volume in order for your speech to be effective. If your shouting your audience will have a hard time paying attention to you however, if your voice is also low then they will again have a hard time because they wont be able to hear you.SO i feel that volume is also key in delivering your speech.
i am sorry my blog is so late i ran into some unexpected hold ups on this one. i planned to post it on friday but classes ended up being cancelled and on saturday when i tried i found that the internet connection was down in my area due to the weather.
I definetly agree with Mike, I feel Monday's class was very helpful in clearing up unanswered questions. Dr. Mino was a very big help in discussing and explaining the use of audience analysis before and during your presentation.
In the reading from chapter 5 i found figure 5.5 the Spectrum of
Audience Opinions and figure 5.6 the Spectrum of Audience Behavior to be very interesting. By referring to figure 5.5 i found out the different levels of an audience's opinions. Before reading this i always thought they either agreed or disagreed, and i was shocked when i found there were many more different levels of their opinions. There is five different agreement levels, the first one is the level strongly agreeing, the second is agree, the third is neutral, the fourth is disagree and the fifth and final one is strongly disagree. The figure 5.6 is very similar to figure 5.5 because the levels of agreement are the same however what makes figure 5.6 different from figure 5.5 is that it has different determining factors. Figure 5.6 deals with the audience and how they may behave quite differently, depending on their attitudes about an issue, and figure 5.5 deals with the subject, audience members may hold a variety of opinions on a given issue.
Today I gave my introductory speech. I feel it went very well for being the first speech I have given in there and all. I composed my speech by using some of the things that I learned from the class lectures and readings out of the book.I felt that Dr. Mino's speeches were very helpful by her explaining what we needed to know in order to present a successful introduction speech. A few points she discussed were; eye contact, stating the residual message, and another one was the apearance of the individual.
The green sheet was very helpful to me as well. It explained to me on how to deliver my speech, and what exactly I needed to put into it. I didn't realize how much work you needed to put into a speech to make it successful.
After reading over recently added blogs, i will agree with what Kevin and Mike said about Mondays class. Having Dr. Mino come in and talk to us for the past two classes really helped me to get organized and i was able to get questions answered that had me confused. Now that the class has meant again and we were able to cover a few details, i feel more confident in the work we are doing.
I found todays class to be very fun and interesting. Listening to each others introductory speeches was entertaining to me. I was nervous before giving mine, but i think it all worked out for the best. I must say that i was impressed with everyone i got a chance to hear today. As you can see (Dr. Pam) we all have much room for improvement, but i also feel we will meet our goals and become much better speakers by semesters end.
As i gave my speech today, Dr. Pam told me that i use "ah" in between my phrases. Chapter 15 calls these "filler phrases." A solution to this is to speak slower and keep the clarity smooth and clear. This way a speaker won't have to worry about their speeches being choppy, which leads to "filler phrases." This is one of many things i must work on to improve my speech.
I am extremely happy that most of you benefitted from Dr. Mino's and Christy's help during my absense. I'm glad they agreed to help out in this way. It helped to alleviate some of the confusion you encountered about the assignments.
You should also pat yourselves on the back. Afterall, most of you finished the audio tapes and quizzes as required during my absense. You also kept up with the blogs although I am hoping to see some improvement in your critical thinking skills. I realize you all have the ability but expressing your critical thoughts in a blog may sometimes be challenging.
Please be sure to make appointments to see me in regard to your informative speeches. Let's be sure we go into the speech with an "A" instead of wishing we had earned an "A" after it is over.
Ok good luck everyone and best of luck to our basketball players this week!
Dr. Pamela
Today I gave my introduction speech, and for my first speech, I thought I did pretty good. Listening to my other classmates talk was very informative. It helped with me the do's and don't do's I should have in my Informative speech. I belive that Jennifer gave an excellent speech. It was very nicely organized and easy to follow. I could pick our her residual message very easily.
I enjoyed the constructive criticism that you gave us after our speech. It told me some things that I need to work on, like not saying the word "stuff" so much. I believe with time and more practice I will become more comfortable with speaking in front of my classmates. The green sheets are definatelly a life savor. They really help you in orgnaizing your speech, and it shows you how to reitterate what you want to say without dragging your speech on for a long time.
In chapter 4 it talks a lot about purpose. I belive that purpose is very important because thats what you want your audience to get out of you speech. When you give a speech you should know what you want to say, how you should say it, and what do you want others to get out of the speech.
I would like to talk about critisism. When all of us gave our introductry speeches at the end Dr Pam would critize us. SHe would tell us what we had or what we didnt have. SHe would also tell us ways that we could improve. As the speaker i felt that the critism was very helpful. It allowed me to see what areas of my speech i needed to do better on. So i feel that having somebody critize you is to your benefit.
In my mind there are two types of criticism, constructive criticism, which is like what Dr Pam was doing and there is the criticism that i guess you could say makes fun of people. I feel that the constructuve criticism helps alot with finding out areas that need improvement.

today while working on my applications speech, I seemed to be struggling most with establishing credibility. I find it extremely hard to tell your audience that your an expert on something that you've just learned. what is the best way to convince an audience that your credible about your subject?
Chapter 6 talks about establishing credibility it defines speaker credibility as the extent to which an audience believes you and the things you say. I can understand how being a knowledgable, honest, and charismatic speaker can help influence your credibility, but I think it will be hard to confidently talk about things that are brand new to you as well as your audience.
Listening to my classmates give speeches this week during class was an interesting experience. It's always enlightening to watch how others handle themselves while speaking in front of a group. For me, it also gives me a chance to think about how I appear to others. The introductory speeches helped refresh some of the public speaking skills I learned in my high school English classes.
Trying to think of topics for my next speech was also a learning experience this week. Though we already read and studied a little bit about different public speaking skills, it's different when trying to apply them to your own life.
Mike has a point about credibility, but I don't think the application speech is dealing with things that you're just learning about. Many of the public speaking skills that we studied are ones that everyone uses in their every day life. Sometimes its just difficult to realize the similarities. Confidence always helps to make your knowledge seem credible. When people use filler phrases alot, they seem less informed about the subject.
As Mike has said, I find it hard to come up with your credibility statement. What is a good process for coming up with that statement that ensures your audience that you know what you are talking about. I understand why we need aour credibilty statement but can someone explain how you do this for the application speech?
Also I have found it difficult, as some of my other classmates have, to give reasons to care. While pondering about the application speech I again ran into a road block with these reasons to care. Has anyone found that their intoduction to a speech to be easily figured out? I would appreciate any feed back to help me out with this.
As Jimmy said, Dr. Pam did criticize us but I realized that I do need to work on these two areas of my presentations. I think another view point is always helpful trying to improve yourelf as a good communicator.
This past week we listened to people give their introductory speechs. It was different giving a speech to people a barely knew. At the moment though I was completely comfortable. Whenever Dr. Pam asked about people to give their thoughts on it, I got nervous about what people would say. I believe that criticism is a good way to learn from mistakes though. Like Dr. Pam said the few things I need to work on is not wearing a hat and looking around the entire classroom, not just straight out.
To help Mike with credibility on his application speech. My speech is going to be connected with something I did in the past. That way you can say you experienced it, so you have some credibility to talk about it. I agree that credibility is hard to establish, but if you try not to think about it too much you'll be able to discover you did use an application of speech without knowing it. For example, in football I never thought about how I use listening and audience analysis on field, but looking at it now it was just second nature at the time. So my advice to someone having trouble establishing credibility for their application is try using something in the present or past. That way you have already experienced using the applications.
First off I want to say I thought everyone did a really gret job on their informative speech! I was so nervous, i didn't think i would be, but i was. Also being the first put pressure on me. I didn't think of using the podium, or notecards, haha, I wish i would have. I was suprised at how hard it was, i didn't think it would be that difficult. I had everything planned out in my head, but as soon as i got up there it all went out the window. Next time im going to need notcards, i believe those would have helped me out a great deal.
However I am nervous about the application speeches, but I think i'll do a better job, now that i have been infront of the class already. I was somewhat lost at first as to how we should state our residual message, but Dr. Pamela was kind enough to help straighten that out for me. thank you. I guess to get over my nervousness im going to just have to practice alot over the weekend. I re-read the chapter on being nervous when presenting, but it didn't seem to help. if anyone has any tips they used that worked i would love to hear them!
I will start by saying, congratulations to everyone. i thought you all did great on your informative speeches. i learned a lot about everyone and i also learned a lot about speaking before people that i just recently met. i will also say that i was very nervous and even managed to forget some of the stuff i wanted to say so i fell short of the goal of 2 minutes. the mistakes i made giving my introduction speech are mistakes ill try to not make a second time in the speeches to come.
i plan to give me application speech on two of my bosses at work and some communication skills required when speaking and or dealing with them. i think its a reasonable application speech and if anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.
Looking back at the past week, I think that all of the speeches went well. I think that everyone did a great job. I think that the application speech will be good as well.
In order to have a good speech, organization is key. In order to keep the audience's attention, the speech should be structured so your audience can follow without loosing them. According to chapter 9, organization helps the speaker to gather ideas and information, arrange those ideas strategically, and enhance his or her credibility. I think that these steps are very helpful for the organization of a speech.I also think that by following the green sheet , it can help to make a speech more organized. It is not that hard either to incorporate it into a speech.
Ok let me address the credibility issue. Will, you did a good job in addressing this already. For Mike and Brandon but also the rest who are unsure about credibility: Your credibility as a speaker on your particular topic arises from your past experience with the topic. For instance, I would not give a speech about being a good registered nurse when I am not a nurse myself. However, I could do a speech about the proper way to take good photos both inside and outdoors. Why? Well, I have been trained and also have had years of experience doing so. If I were doing a persuasive speech about being an organ donor my credibility could simply be established by the fact that I have a vested interest in helping people save their lives through an organ donation. My credibility is better of course if I have already been a volunteer to help spread the word about organ donation in my area. One thing to remember is that you should not be doing a speech about a topic you are just learning. You won't feel as comfortable about it. Don't talk about football strategies if you have never played football and don't offer to be a baseball manager if you have never played the sport. It is all the same. Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton and John McCain believe they are credible candidates for the upcoming election. We may agree with one or two of them but I bet each can speak about their ability to run this country. As the audience we can agree or disagree so the job is on their shoulders to prove their credibility. I hope this helps you to understand credibility issues.
So I just gave my application speech on Monday and I am feeling alot more comfortable up there in front of everybody. I did feel comfortable but my mind tried to skip things and it obviously did although Dr. Pam was right that most of us do need to work on the internal summaries that we are supposed to have at the end of the main points.
I know realize that this class is going to help me alot with the fact that in the job field when you do give a presentation, you cannot afford to have your mind start skipping around your ideas you want to say. Like I had said, my mind had started to juggle everything that I was going to say and I think I might have to sit down and think of a way that I can remeber my speech in the organized fashion that we must give them in.
After I gave my speech and realized that my ideas we boggled around, I started to think of the chapter on speech anxiety. When I read over that chapter, I thought to myself that it wouldn't happen to me but now reality had hit me and it may be time to rethink about that chapter.
This week we had to give our application speeches. Today's speeches (March 5) were good. I enjoyed listening to each of my fellow students giving their speeches and noticed that most, if not all of them improved greatly from the recent introductory speeches. I find it very suprising that one can improve his/her speaking skills just after one attempt. As we each get critiqued we are able to fix the things we need to work on. I think these ungraded speeches are giving each student a good chance to correct each error before being graded. Just think how good we could be at speaking to an audience by the semester's end!
In My application speech, i used two important applications. These applications are listening and organization. I discussed with the class that both of these applications are useful for my schooling and basketball. To succeed in life, we will all need to put both of these elements in good use. After reading the chapter in the book discussing these two things, I thought it would be important to discuss them with the rest of the class.
This week on Monday and Wednesday the class presented their application speeches. I was not in class on Monday due to basketball, but from what I saw on Wednesday the speeches looked and sounded really good. The students made big improvements since we gave our first speeches. The big thing I noticed is mostly everybody seemed more confident in talking infront of a group of people. I beleive this is one of the biggest challenges to overcome when giving speeches and I feel our class did a really good job of overcoming it. Alot of the speeches seemed to be better structured as well, and I also noticed numerous people used note cards as references and I believe that made a big difference in the presentation of the information. The last thing I noticed is mostly all of the speeches met the time requirement and some even went over. I think this was good because I beleive it is better to be over than too short.
Wednesday was the day I presented my speech. The two parts of speech I chose to talk were organization and listening. I told how I must use organization to suceed in my life because I currently have a busy schedule with basketball and school, and I must be able to organize both so I can succeed. The second point I chose to talk about was listening. This too is also very valuable in my life because once again with basketball and school I must be a good listener, so I can understand the material and learn it as quickly as I can because I miss some classes due to basketball. Just as I use these two parts of speech in my everyday life, every other person in society does as well. They may not think so and the parts of speech they use may not be as obvious but everybody does incorporate different parts of speech into their everyday life.
Preparing for my Informative speech is harder than I thought it would be. I am struggling on trying to fit my ten sources into my speech. It seems diffilcult to just add them into your speech, but hopefully by going to the library and getting explained the sources a little bit better I will get a better grasp on it. Also, I am very nervous about the time on my speech. I get nervous enough as it is only being up for for 3 minute much less doubling the time to 6, so I went back and reviewed chapter 14 on performance and practice. I think by practicing a lot I will be much more confident and the talking will come so naturally for me. Also, a big help will be having note cards that way if I blank out or forget something, the note cards will be my back up.
Also, I gave my appliction speeech on Monday and for the most part it went pretty well. The thing I really need to work on my transitions from one point to the next. Also, I need to summerize my ideas before I give my conclusion. It really helped me give a good speech because we got to hear an example of an application speech and I was able to build off of that. And by you giving us a critique on our speech after we complete them, it really helps to know what we are and aren't doing properly.
FIrst of all Id like to congragulate everybody on their application speeches they were all very good. I liked how i got to hear how people apply speech concepts to their career choice. It gave me more ideas of what i could use for my own career. I feel more confident than i did in my first speech and i wasnt as nervous.
Im having a hard time trying to find sources for my informative speech. Im afraid that i wont have enough information to meet the time requirement. Honestly, thinking about the informative speech is kind of making me a little nervous for the fact that i have to be up there longer.
First i would like to say that i enjoyed listening and learning from everyones application speeches. with each speech we do the more comfortable and more prepared i am getting to do the introduction speech. i now feel confident i can deliver an at least satisfactory speech that everyone can at least learn something from. I personally felt that this second speech turned out much better for me than my introductory speech and if i can further improve upon this one i think i will do fine.
Also i learned a lot more today about how to use our library to find sources for my informative speech. i feel that i will be able to find all of the information i need based on audience analysis that led me in the direction of the information i need to deliver.
So once again good job everyone and see you all after break.
First off I too would like to tell everyone that i think they did an amazing job on their speeches! I was happy that i did mine right because i was afraid it wouldn't be similar to everyone elses.
I had a really bad head cold this week and i was afriad it would effect my clarity when giving my speech, sadly it did hurt my volume a little. I think my face got red when i gave my speech also. but as far as nerves go i'm doing much better compaired to my introduction speech, i think anyway.
I'm just worried about my informative speech now, i'll have to spend some of my vacation time working on it and i just hope i can find enough information on my topic. Going over our resources again today though helped me remeber all the recources i have and where i need to go to get them so i don't think finding enough information will be to big of a problem.
I hope everyone has a great spring break, don't party to hard. :]
Alright, I want to say congrats to everyone on a job well done with their speechs. I feel everyone is really improving and getting comfortable with the people in class. Although I feel like I did better on my first speech because I thought about everything I was going to say, whereas I remembered more material as I was speaking for my second speech and it really through me off. I'm hoping to still improve my speech delivery for the informative speech. I know I'll be working all spring break to make it fit the way I need to present it.
The problem I'm having with my topic is getting it narrowed down. The sources I'm not too concerned about with trying to fit it in, because once you develop your structure you should be able to place them in perfectly. I know everyone is going to be doing their speechs over spring break, instead of laying in bed all day and catching up on lost sleep. Well I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's informative speech and learning a lot from it. I wish everyone a safe and exciting spring break.
I would like to tell everyone that they did an awesome job on their application speeches.
Preparing for the informative speech is a bit more challenging just trying to find some information for the informative speech, since we have to use the library for at least one of our source. I thought that the review over the library was good idea and hopefully very useful for the speeches that we will have to do in this class.

hello class, first let me begin by saying that I apologize for being late with this blog. My only defense is that in the rush to get last minute projects done before break it completely slipped my mind. During class this week while listening to other students give there application speeches I was very impressed with how comfortable some of the other students looked, thats something I would like to know more about. I dont know about the rest of the class but I seem to be having a hard time finding a topic which is appropriate to talk about. I think that I have a decent informative topic it just needs to be structured differently. This is something which I'll be working on after I take a few days off to enjoy my break. I hope that everyone enjoy's their break and for those of you heading for warmer climates please bring back some warm weather with you.
hello class,
blog 10
hope everyone is enjoying their break. I thought the library session was extremely helpful last friday. Eventhough I have sat through a few of the teaching sessions on how to research information it always seems like I learn something helpful each time I am there. I thought that the section entitled look here first in the library resources which offered opposing views would be extremely helpful because there are always two sides to every story. While working on my informative speech this week I was unable to locate in my notes or in the syllabus how many or how exactly we are to cite the sources in our speech. If anyone has this information could they please email it to me. best wishes to everyone to enjoy whats left of their break see ya nextweek.
Blog 10 In my blog last week I stated that I wasn't sure on how to put my 10 sources into my speech, or even how to find 10 sources. I found the library session to be very successful and helpful. In preparing for my informative speech I used my audience analysis that I passed out in class and it really helped me to know what my audience is interested in. Now my speech will be hopefully more interestsing to my audience becasue they make up my statistics and information I found out about them.
Having your audience informed and interested in your speech is very important. Also, they are critiquing us on how we do on our speeches. Their input is very important in knowing where we stand and how we can imporove. The critique sheets give us a good understanding of how we can improe. Also, us video taping ourselves will let us see what we do or dont do. For exmaple like using your hands a lot or saying the words "stuff" "um" or "yeah".This way we will be able to improve for our persuasive speech. I hope that everyone is comfortable with their speeches, and is ready to present them. Good Luck to others who havn't finished them yet!
Hey everybody! Yes, I am back and won't be missing anymore classes because of basketball! Hope break is going well for everybody. I've been reading over most of your recently added blogs to see what i missed during your friday session in the library. It sounds like you all benefited from it. I've notice many of you were able to get more organized in the sense that you know more about finding your ten sources and how to include them in your informative speeches. If anybody feels that there is a piece of information that i must know about any topic I have missed from my absence, please feel free to email me!
The last class i was able to attend (Wed. March 5th) I was able to get my audience analysis passed out to the rest of my classmates. This will really help me narrow down the topics within my speech you are all interested in. I feel that the more audiece analysis you can get to the people you will be speaking to, the more feedback you can recieve. This will allow any speaker to keep their audience interested in what they are talking about. The more feedback you get from your audience, the more you can give back during your speech.
Last week I missed class on Friday when you went to the library, but I heard it was very informative and helpful. I talked with a few of the students to see what I missed and they were a big help in trying to give me the information that was given to them at the library. I feel I am more up to speed then I had been with all of the information, and I would like to thank those students who helped me get caught up.
Last week audience analysis questionars were passed out. They play a big role in preparing an informative speech. By getting the audiences input and information on what they know and do not know about your topic allows you to come up with the best presentation you can. It allows you to incorporate information that will be interesting and valuable to your audience into your presentation.
Hey guys. Alright so I've been really slacking this break with trying to get started on my speech for class. Luckily I was put in a group that doesn't go for a while. I'm still having trouble narrowing my topic down to where it's very specific, but not too specific where I don't meet the time limit. Of course it would help if I would actually get started on my research and finally narrowing it down.
I've been in the library a few times now using the library homepage. I used the databases and CAT in English and in my Music class last semester. It was very helpful and gave me a lot of information. Hopefully I can start my research soon and get started with knowing my speech and improving what I know I had trouble with in my second and first speech. Well I hope everyone is enjoying there break and I'll see you in class on Monday.
Blog 10.
Hey whats up guys!! I hope you all enjoyed break as much as i did. I had to work alot but hey its better than school.
Before we went to the librart session i was wondering how in the world i was going to find ten sources for my informative speech. I was scratching my head. However, the librart session really helped me. I am so lucky that i get to be able to have access to so many books over the internet!! I found that finding ten sources really wasnt going to be all that hard anymore. I have found so much information on my topic.
Next i want to talk a little bout my speech. I am kind of nervous about my speech. I think its going to be a little bit harder to stand up in front of the class for like 5 minutes talking about my topic. I got a lot of information on my topic and my audience analysis helped out alot. I got some great information from them, but i hope it dont bore everybody.

Today Mike, Ashley, and Jessica gave their informative speehes today. I think all three of them did a great job! I think that the speeches are getting better and better each week. There are some things that we all need to work on and it is showing, as everyone is aware of things they shouldn't be doing, such as nervous habits.
I am working on my speech, which will be given on Friday. As I am preparing, I am trying to follow the green sheet as much as possible. I am also trying to incorporate my sources and my audience analysis into my speech as well. I think that by going to the library it was helpful to see the resources that are available for us to use while preparing for our speeches.
Very well done on all the informative speeches thus far. I have enjoyed listening to them and i have actually learned some stuff about what everyone has spoken about and i have also learned a lot about how to give my own informative speech. I am personally glad that i am in group three because i got to view two days worth of speeches so that i may fine tune the ideas that i plan to present in mine. As i know those who went on the first day did not have this luxury i would like to extend a further congratulations and good job on your speeches because you all did well without previous examples.
I observed a lot of effective use of audience analysis in everyones speeches. I feel that their use of the audience analysis made it more personal to the class itself and made it more relevant to that class also.
I also had the opportunity to view everyone effectively cite sources within their speeches and it has become more clear to me on how to do so i have a feeling that we all now better understand how to deliver the internal citations based on viewing each other do it.
Thus far i have viewed really well organization within everyones speeches. they all seemed to follow the green sheet and managed to hit pretty much all of the points contained within that sheet. due to everyone following the green sheet i have been able to clearly understand what each individual has been speaking about in their speeches.
So congratulations to everyone thus far and i have enjoyed listening to everyones speeches and i look forward to presenting my speech to the class on monday, have a nice easter everyone!
Congradulations everyone who gave speeches the past two days of class. Each and every one of you did a very good job. I was very impressed with everything that I have learned so far. I would like to comment a little bit on each person.
Mike, I enjoyed your speech on buying a house, it gave me a lot of things to think of before I purchase my first home. Your speech was nicely organized and very informative, also you dressed very nicely.
Ashley, your speech taught me that working for pen dot isn't as easy as people think it is. I was surprised to hear you say that you almost got ran over a few times. I thought that you had very good eye contact through out you speech.
Jessica, your speech I thought was very informative becasue i never knew there were that many ways of breathing. I really liked your conclusion when you all had us take a breath at the end. That really tied your whole speech together!
Brandon, I didn't realize there was so many problems with finding a job with illegal immigration. Your speech was nicely organized and you had good sources. You also had good statistics and eye contact.
Clifton, I enjoyed the subject on voting, especailly becasue of all of all of the political elections and things on tv. I enjoyed hearing it.
Jessica, Your speech was very good. It was very well orgainzed and informative. It was very easy to follow. Also, I didn't know that much about dairy products. You used audience analysis very well, and you also cited your sources properly. Your eye contact was also very good.
Kevin, Your speech was very interesting about diet pills. I didnt realize there were so many side effects them. Also, your speech was nicely organized and your volume was nice and loud.
All of these speeches allowed me to know what should be expected when I give my speech. Since I got to hear other people go first, I am more comfortable in giving mine. I have learned that audience ananlysis is very important in our speeches, and that is something that seems to be the biggest problem with the speeches, so I hope to incorperate that enough in mine, Also, The tone in everyone has been very good. I could hear everyone very well. Finally, eye contact was good! Some looked at the audience more than others, but nobody just read off of their note cards, and that is a positive.
I have learned that giving a profession, well organized speech is very important. It not only makes you look good, but if makes the people you are representing look good to. It is very important to have good speaking skills in life.
Audience analysis I would have to say is the biggest thing I have to work on for my speech. Organization on the speeches seemed good, so I hope I can make mine that good. Eye contact was good and the dress was very professional. The only other aspect to the speeches that need work on was the sources, some had more than others, so I hope to be able to incorproate them well in my speech!
Again, I just have to say good job to everyone who has done their speeches so far, I am very impressed, and Good luck to those who still need to go, I'm sure you will do a good job!
First I would just like to say that I throughly enjoyed all of the speeches i heard this week. It Is so impressive to me how comfortable some people look in front of the class. For my blog this week I would like to discuss the three things I believe the speakers really shined on.
The first subject I would like to discuss is purpose and topic and how it related to the speeches presented this week. I can't speake for anyone else, but I picked as I believe most of the other speakers picked a topic they had some familiarity with. I think that its easier to talk about something that your interested in or have some knowledge about. I know that it was important to choose a topic which had some bearing on the entire class. but if you were able to establish a good reason to care then I think it was a suitable topic.
Next I would like to say that how people cited thier sources was also good. I know that as I listened to the speeches it seemed that whenever a source was cited during a speech they appeared to backup the point the speaker was trying to make. While I can't say that I remember every source that was cited some were very helpful to explain what was being presented. I really enjoyed how Brandon and Clifton finished with qoutes from well known people.
lastly I would just like to talk about structure. For those of you who painstakingly sat through my application speech you know that structure was were I needed to improve the most. My problem then was that my transitions were completely off. Fortunately between listening to a few examples of speeches and getting some help I was able to improve my transitions and narrow my speech down so that I could get everything in that needed to be included. Throughout the speeches that I listened to this week it seemed clear that everyone else understood the proper way to structure a speech. I think that almost everyone who spoke was told that they had good structure.
One other thing that I would like to talk about is when it was brought up about videorecording your speeches I was apprehensive. I thought thats great, one more thing to be nervous about and if you screw up you can watch it over and over again. But after watching my speech the first thing i thought was, I dont look near as nervous as I felt. Another thing about the videotape is that I am my own worst critic. There were things that I saw on the tape that I know I can improve on. Also there were things on the tape that were done well which I was extremely happy about.
To close I would just like to say that I thought all the speeches went well. If I were grading everyone would have an A. While I know that Dr. Pam would like us to be more critical of the other speakers I honestly can't be critical of other speakers because I'm no better at this than anyone else is if I were I wouldn't be in this class. Besides I like to try to look at life as the glass is half full and to try to accentuate the positves. Maybe its because I am a parent. I wouldn't tell my sons to put the ball away because they cant make the shot yet, I would put them on my shoulders and let them slam dunk it.
I have been very impressed so far with all of the informantive speeches that have been given over the past two days. I was not sure what to expect out of them but I was impressed at the enormous stride that each student has made since the last speech we had to give. The first speech we were required to give was noticeably the first one, each student seemed somewhat nervous and just the structure and organization of the speeches were not where they needed to be. Everyone greatly improved on the second ungraded speech. Each student seemed more confident and did not seem as nervous as they did during the first one, and each speech was better constructed than the first one. The same amount if not more improvement was made between the second ungraded speech and the informative speeches that the students started presenting on Wednesday.
From what I have seen so far has been pretty impressive. What I feel to be one of the biggest improvements in the speeches up to this point is the confidence level of each student. Each student that has presented so far has seemed much more confident standing up talking infront of the class than they did in the previous two speeches. The second major improvement that I have noticed is how well everyone's speeches have seemed to be. Each speech that has been given have been very organized and for the most part easy to follow. This is a very important factor in giving speeches because if your speech is not well organized your audience may become lost at times during your speech, and that is something that you want to try to avoid at all cost. If an audience can not follow what you are saying you might as well not be talking because you will not be getting any of your information across. One of the last noticeable points that I have seen during the speeches is how the audience analysis has been incorporated into the speech. A few people incorporated thier audience analysis into their speeches tremendously and at numerous points throughout it as well. The other people on the other hand has not been terrible by any means, they just have to incorporate more audience analysis into their speeches and refer to it a little more. This is nothing major and should not be a hard thing to accomplish, and I feel everyone will do a very good job with it one the next speech. The last thing I noticed is how well some people used supporting sources such as newspaper and magazine articles. I feel that was very well done and added to the overall effect the presentation had on the audience.
While listening to the speeches I learned many new things that I have never really given a thought to before. From listening to Mike's speech I learned many new things that deal with buying a house. This process is much more complicated than I had thought before. Then during Ashley's speech I realized how hard working at Penn Dot really is. I will admitt it and I apologize for it but until I heard her speech I was one of those people who thought all Penn Dot workers do is stand around and lean on their shovels. I have gained greater respect for the men and women who work for Penn Dot after listening to Ashley's speech. The next speech I found to be very interesting as well and that was very informative was Jessica's speech on different ways to breathe. I thought there was only one way of breathing until I heard her speech. I think that is pretty interesting how breathing in different ways can make you feel better. Brandon's speech was one that I had never really given much thought to before. But now I realize that illegal immigration does play a factor in the amount of jobs there are in society, and something should be done to reduce the amount of immigrants we let into our country because they are just taking jobs away from the American citizens. Brandon I found your speech to be informative as well because with all the presidential election stuff that is going on right now it dealt with it nicely.
The last speech I heard was Jessica's and it was on dairy products. I found this speech to be very interesting and informative as well. Jessica did a very good job presenting her information and used good supporting facts and quotes. Everyone who has presented their speeches so far has done an outstanding job and I am sure those of you who have not gone yet will do a very good job as well, and I am very interested to hear what each one is about. The last thing I want to say is, good job to those of you who have gone so far they were great and goodluck to those of you who have not gone yet I am sure they will be great too.
As the informative speeches are being prsented, I feel that everyone has done an excellent job! For this week's blog, I want to talk about three things that speakers did very well this week. They include: presentation aids, speaker credibility and ethics, and organization. I think that the levels are being raised and everyone is doing a better job at getting ready for their speeches and also the delivery of the speeches.
First, for presentation aids, I think that Jessica did a fantastic job of using handouts she had to go along with her speech. She distributed them at the beginning, so it didnt take up time and she also told us when to flip them over and look at them. This made it not a distraction for us as the audience. I also think that Ashely did a good job with using her helmet from Penn Dot. It was interesting because it went along with her speech. Also since she was a Penn Dot worker, it seemed fitting to use it as a visual aid when she was talking about their job.
Next, I think that everyone had established credibility very nicely. I personally liked how Mike used in his introduction about buying homes, that he had bouthg homes int eh past. Having that kind of experience makes it easier to give a speech.
Finally, all of the speeches seemed to have good organization . I think that Kevin did a great job of organizing his speech. He knew what he was talking about and used good facts to support his topics. Also, I think that he also knew what he was talking about, so it made it seem like he knew a lot about the topic. He also seemed very comfortable while giving his speech.
Listening to all of the speeches that were given so far definitely informed me about a lot of things. For example, I did not know how difficult Penn Dot's job is. From a drives perspective, it seems like they have an easy job. But in realikty it can be very dangerous since you are by all the traffic. Clifton talked about voting. I personally am not a registered voter yet, but I am going to be registering soon. It is important to vote, and to express your opinion.
FOr my next speech, I am going to try to incorporate more facts and use more of my sources.I found it hard to use all of them in the 4-6 minutes time that was allowed. I used them all to prepare for my speech , but actually stating in my speech about each ,I found difficult. I am going to try to work on that for my persuasive speech.
This week has been a different learning experience compared to normal. It's nice to see how much everyone has improved when giving their speeches. I'm not very proud of how my speech turned out, but I think everyone else did a very good job. I learned alot from all of the speakers.
I liked how Jessica used her visual aid. It was very nicely done and different from the other speeches so far. I won't be buying a house of my own for a long time, but Mike's speech definitely gave me a lot to consider for when I'm finally done with college and able to buy a house.
Compared to the other speeches, I learned that I need to work on alot for my own. Everyone seems to be doing a great job using their research effectively, and I realized that for my next speech I need to chose a subject that's easier to find information on instead of relying on just personal experience. For me, it's hard to think of a subject that is beneficial to the entire audience and at the same time be something I enjoy talking about.
When it comes to giving criticism for other speeches, I have to agree with what Mike said. It's hard to look down on other when you yourself are having similar problems.
I just want to say everyone is doing such a great job on their speehes. I have really enjoyed hearing them all. Everyone has presented themselves nicely. Everyone has improved so much from the first speech. I can tell everyone is becoming more confident when standing in front of the class, they stutter less and stand up straighter and everyones eye contact is much better compaired to the first speeches.
Everyones organization throughout their speeches has also greatly improved. I have been able to follow them more clearly compaired to speech one. Transitions were nicely used and allowed me to recognize when the speaker was moving on to the next main point or sub point. The use of audience analysis was nicely used in some of the speeches. There were a few that could have thrown it in a couple more times but it’s ok I’m sure you’ll be able to get more in on your persuasive speech, but you still did an excelent job. Supporting material also played a huge role in the informative speeches so far, and everyone has done a great job at citing and quoting it. It’s nice to hear facts to back up ones opinion when they are informing you on something important.
While listening to the speeches I learned new things, and found out new facts that I found really interesting!
In Mike's speech I found out that there are a lot of crucial things to consider when planning and buying a house, from the house itself to the location surrounding it. The next speech I thought was done very nicely and I took great interest in was Jessica's speech on breathing techniques. I knew very little about yoga and the breathing techniques it offered and the benefits it has. I even took her handout on the one type of breathing and tried it out. Im happy to say I gave it a chance because it really did help to relax me and I felt better after doing so.
Brandon's speech is one on a very hot topic at the moment that is very big in politics and I think he did an excelent job at informing the class on imigration it helped some realize that it does play a factor in the amount of jobs there are in society, and that immediate action should be taken to reduce the amount of illegal immigrants that are escaoing into our country.
The final speech this week that I found to be the best so far was Jessica's speech about dairy products. It was organized perfectly and there were barely any areas of mistake, she seemed confident, and I greatly enjoyed her speech.
Everyone has done a great job so far! I just hope my speech can measure up! Congrats on the excelent job everyone has done so far, and best of luck to those of you like myself who go next week!
First off, i would like to say congrats to all the students who gave their speeches this week. After watching and listening to each of you, I was able to pick of on knew things that I could better my speech with. Everyone seems to be coming along very nicely. I think that it is very noticable that everyone is really improving on their speaking abilities. If you compare everyone's speeches this week to our first practice speech, I think you'll notice how much we've improved when speaking infront of a group of people. With all this said, we all have much room to improve.
Three skills that are found in our book that I noticed in other student's speeches this week are audience analysis, vocal delivery, and organization. I'd first like to start off by taking about audience analysis. So far, I think most of our speakers have done a nice job using their audience analysis. One person who I thought did a great job at this was Clifton. His speech was on illegal immigrants and job opportunities decreasing. He was able to take his audience analysis and add it to his speech so it supported the information he was talking about. By using his audience analysis, he was able to come up with different percentages from the students in the class, and used it in his speech by letting the class know was percentage of the class knew about certain topics in his speech.
The second skill i noticed was vocal delivery. Once again, i feel everyone did a pretty nice job with this. I thought Jennifer really stood out when it came to a nice fluid delivery. As she delivered her speech on dairy products, i thought she did a nice job projecting her voice. You could tell that she really practice her speech because she only had to refer to her cards as a reminder. This allowed her to keep eye contact with the class and she didnt have her head down as she spoke. Also, I thought she went at a nice pace. This is important because you dont want your speech to be choppy, and if you to fast or to slow, you wont meet your asked time.
The third skill i was able to pick up on while watching this weeks blogs was organization. I knew organization was very important for a good speech, but after hearing this weeks speeches, i realized how important it really was. If you are not organized it is easy to bounce back and forth in your speech which leaves you with a confused audience. I though Mike did a good job having his speech organized. As he gave his speach about home-ownership, it was obvious how you had a good introduction, body and conclusion. He was able to really tie in each subtitle with wach main point while using details to support each. I really benefited from Mike's speech because it was a good example of how to organize each step in order.
Not only is this class important because it teaches us how to speak better, but it also helps us get ready for the real world. Each of us might not notice it right now, but each speech we do, and each skill we learn, we are improving our social skills which will increase our opportunities in the field of jobs. Some of us won't realize how competitive the world really is until we get out there and try to get employed. Skills like organization, vocal delivery and presentation are all very crucial in the work-force. I feel like this is a class that we can all benefit from later on down the road when it comes time to interview for jobs.
I've learned a lot from this weeks speeches. I am fortunate to have the chance to watch seven speeches before i have to give mine of monday. I am fortunate because i had the chance to see the things i really need to do well and the other things i need to make sure i don't do (like nervous gestures or read off my notecards). I was able to pick up something positive from each person who spoke already. There are three major things i will improve on for my speech. They are my physical and vocal delivery, involving my audience analysis in my speech, and getting my sources in my speech as well. I hope you all enjoy my speeches. I know i have enjoyed everybodies speeches so far, and everyone is doing a great job! Looking forward to the persuasive speeches as well!
Well to start out i want to say WOW to everybody that did there infomative speech this past week. They were awesome and they were very good. I enjoyed each and every speech. THere wasnt one speech that didnt interest me.
I particualy liked Mike's speech. Something about what to look for when buying a house really opened my eyes. However, like i said before everyones speech was great and i hope that on wednesday my speech goes just as smooth and turns out just as good as everyone elses.Everybody did a great job picking a topic to choose from thus far. I feel that picking the right topic is key to any presentation. Choosing the right topic for your audience is very important.
Next, i want to tlak about the visual aids that Jessica and Ashley brught in. I liked how Jessica brought in a hand out of certain aspects of her speech. It was very well organized and could be easily read. I liked Ashleys speech about working for PennDot. I never knew how much more was involved. The hardhat was a nice touch too! I dont know if the rest of the class plans on bringing in any visual aids, but it is a great addition to any speech. So if you arent going to bring a visual aid in maybe you should rethink that idea.
Next, i would like to touch base on the audience analysis. Listening to the speeches i got a great feel for how the audience analysis should fit into your speech. Between listening to your guys speeches and listening to Dr Pam i got a pretty good grasp on things. THe audience analysis in the speeches thus far are excellent. THe facts, to me, are just astonishing on some of the speeches. From Jessicas speech all the way to Kevin's speech the facts were great.
Next, i want to talk about delivery of the speeches. Everybody did a awesome job deliverying their speeches. THe tone was good, volume was good, eye contact was good too!! So far everybody seems very relaxed and comfortable when they are up there giving their speeches. I hope i am the same way. I think that delivery is one of the hardest areas of a speech. Its hard to get the tone and volume of your voice adjusted for your audience because what you hear yourself isnt necessaily whtat the audience hears. SO thats why i feel taht delivery is a hard part to any speech.
THe more and more speeches that i listen too. I realize how importnat speaking is in real life. I feel that from the readings there are many things that i can take with me and apply to my job like viaual aids, topic, purpose, and delivery.
I havent done my informative speech yet but i feel that i can make my audience analysis a little better and make sure that my facts are good to. I do my speech on Wednesday and after that i am going to take the criticism and improve from there.
Let me begin by saying congratulations and bravo on a job well done to the people who did their speeches this week. I was very impressed in how every speech was very informative and very well planned out. Everyone who went seemed to be very confident in what they were talking about. Also, each person applied everything we learned to giving and preparing their speech. The three applications I noticed the most were audience analysis, organization, and delivery.
Now let me talk about how everyone used audience analysis in their speeches. Jennifer had a good amount of audience analysis in her speech. Which I believe helped her speech be much more informative and much more comfortable for her to give. Of course nothing against the others who spoke, because their speeches were good as well. Along with audience analysis, the speakers also used the application of organization. I can’t point out a single speech that wasn’t very well organized. I believe this benefitted everyone by making it easier to remember and flow through while standing in front of the class. The last application that everyone used was delivery. Mike, Kevin, and Jennifer gave excellent speeches, which in part I believe was because of their delivery. All three of them used very good volume and spook very clearly. This helped the rest of the class comprehend what they were talking about. Others who spook hesitated in some spots, which gave a sense of nervousness. I don’t recall hearing Jennifer hesitate once when it came to her speech. This added to the effectiveness of her speech, making it much more memorable.
Now let me talk about how those applications relate to real world situations. First is audience analysis, which comes to be important when talking to co-workers, prospective clients, bosses, etc. If you don’t have the proper audience analysis for the work place, you can really make yourself look like a fool. Think about having a new co-worker come up to and start explaining how to use a certain type or software that you already know how to use. It would get very annoying and make you think less of your colleague. Another example of why audience analysis is important is it makes it easier to focus on what to talk about when speaking in front of unfamiliar faces. Next I want to tell you how organization plays an important role in the real world. I’m sure everyone has watched a cop show where the felons stumble around to find the proper papers for a traffic stop. How stupid do they look whenever they end up handing them the wrong thing? Well if you were very organized, you could probably make yourself look a little more responsible than what it seems by having the papers there and ready. It will also cut down on half the time passer-bys will have to look at you and wonder what you could have possibly done wrong. The last thing I want to explain is delivery. If you don’t have the proper deliver y in the real world, then no one is going to take you seriously. Imagine being the boss of a store and your employees aren’t fully productive. If you tell them to get to work in a jokingly tone, then you probably won’t any improvement. However, if you use a stern voice than puts purpose behind it, then they probably will find the closest task possible as to not get on your bad side further.
In conclusion, the speeches this week were amazing. I can’t wait to hear the persuasive, since people have heard the things they still need to touch up on. I’m hoping I hear more applications used next time, other than audience analysis, organization, and delivery; although those applications are still very important to deliver great speeches in class and real world scenarios. I’d like to end with a quote stating, “The harder your work… …The luckier you get.”
BRAVO everyone! I am very pleased at the impressive improvement in your blogs for this week. I believe you have been proving to yourselves and to me how well you are doing in this class. Your speeches have shown great improvement from the beginning of the semester; additionally, you are all taking an active role in that improvement by adhering to the crucial points that are necessary in achieving more quality in your speeches.
One point I want to make about Mike's comment on negative criticism which some of you have picked up on. First of all, I wish you would not see criticism as negative but rather as instructive. I am a positive person myself (my husband thinks that positive and negative are only in batteries)and do not enjoy being around much negativity. However, in the teaching profession, we are faced with this dilemma that if we are only positive and need to make a suggestion then is it fair for a student to have a false assessment about his/her achievement? I owe it to you as your instructor to guide you into the best practices of a good speaker. So any critique given to you by me or by your peers is simply to help you improve. It never is to shame you or to denounce you. When we teach our children, we also must make suggestions for their improvement. When a child is learning to write and makes an "E" backwards, you may praise him/her for his/her efforts and then show them the proper way to write the "E" by asking them if they know how to do that.....children are amazing and always want to please us. So please do not look at this part of the speeches as negative. It is not. It is instructive.
Thank you all for a fine job this week!
Yes I would also like to give a big hand to everyone that gave their speeches besides myself. Everyone has improved across the board including myself from our first two speeches. Everything is now starting to come together fluently with the speeches for example, the internal summarizes, reasons to care, and support.
Everyone has incredible internal summarizes so far when they have spoken. This skill has improved drastically and I have now realized that how well it stresses your points or information across to the audience. I really have never thought that those summarizes were a big deal til I had heard everybodies speeches this past week.
Reasons to care is another big topic that I really had over looked in my first two speeches. I know realize that this brings the audience into your speeches and keeps them interested. This is a big factor when you are trying to inform people but when you dont give these reasons, you lose your audience right away.
Finally, the last thing is support. Support, I know now from already speaking, is very crucial when trying to present a point not many people know about. When giving my speech, I had notice that the audince seemed a little more intrigued with the more support that I had gave them and it made me a bit more credible.
This speech class will be with me through out the rest of my life because I now realize that all the things Dr. Pam is looking for in our speeches is everything that an employer will be looking for in an interview and the rest of your profession. This is a great eye opener for the real world out in the job market.
Today (Monday, March 24) I had to give my infromational speech along with three other students. I first off want to point out that each of you did a fine job along with everyone else who spoke last week. I was able to benefit from the fact that i got to watch most of the students speeches before giving mine today. You all were very good sources to gain information from and good examples for things i should do to succeed while giving my speeches. It is a different feeling when going up infront of an audience and speeking when you know that your speech is being graded. I thought you all were great listeners and hope you gained something from my speech. It was this week while preparing for my speech that i realized how much you can use the information in the book as a guidline for a great speech.
I learned a lot from preparing for my speech this week. I found out that being organized is a key for success. It makes learning the body of your speech much easier. Alos, I would like to add that practice does make perfect. Even though i know my speech was far from perfect, i really benefited from going over my speech many times and practicing infront of an audience. After watching the tape of my first speech, I was able to catch a few things that i will need to improve on before our persuasive speeches. I am proud to say that we all seem to be getting much better at giving speeches. I am looking forward to hearing the last of the infromative speeches and getting started into the persuasive! Good luck everybody!
weekly blog mar. 24
hello fellow speech students, I thought that the finishing up of informative speeches went very well on wednesday. I beleive it was interesting how the speeches sorta were connected in that Jimmy talked about stress which I think everyone can relate to, Kaitlin talked about drinking which many people do to cope with the efffects of stress, and Josh talked about exercise which is another excellent form of stress reduction. If jimmy would have went first it would have been a great group speech.
On to the next speech, Persuasion which seems like it will be a bit more challenging. Obviously the different structure will make it seem like a whole new way of preperation but I think it will at least be easier to speak in front of the class with experience that was gained from the last speech. In chapter 20 it list the four critical steps to ensure that your presentation achieves its purpose as 1) match your purpose to your passion 2) build strong arguments 3) clarify your claims 4) use persuasive evidence
I beleive that with these things involved in your preperation it will be helpful in preparing for this presentation
To summarize this week as you all know, monday and wednesday we finished up the informative speeches. I ended up giving mine on Monday along with the 3 other people in my group. I feel everyone did good out of group three. i managed to learn a lot and onc again got to see how everyone is maturing in the process of giving a speech. Everyone on monday seemed to properly use audience analysis and also had a large amount of supporting material within their speeched, congrat guys.
On wednesday i got to view the last set of informative speeches. I was impressed because once again everyone has managed to mature greatly in their speech giving abilities. as each set of speeches are done the use of things like audience analysis and following the green sheat have become much more organized much more effectively used.
I personally was surprised at how well i feel i did on giving my speech on monday. i can tell that this class is making me more refined in the way that i present my speech. before i just kind of bs'd my way through them in highschool and now i find myself actually planning the structure to which i want to present so that i know what im going to talk about when i am infront of the audience. i can only imagine that i along with everyone else in the class will only further improve on the next speech. good luck to everyone on that and congratulations to everyone for successfully making it through the informative speech.
Today, Friday, it was nice to hear that speech read to us. it showed me a good example on how to envoke emotion from the audience. and i am glad that we got into our groups because i feel that we all have the same goal on the next speech. and that is probably a goal we all have and that is to do as good as we possibly can on the next speech. (extra credit would be nice right?)
So congrats to everyone on making it through the informative speeches and look forward to moving on into the persuasive speeches next week. have a nice weekend everyone!
I first off want to point out that each of you did a fine job along with everyone else who spoke last week and this week.
I felt the people who went this week did well. Group 3 and group 4 were very imfromative and enjoyable. I thought that 2 of my favorite speeches this week were Kristen and Will's speeches. I liked these two the best because they were very organized and well put together speeches. I felt both gave good sources and detail. Like many other speeches, i was able to enjoy the speech while learning at the same time. They both seemed very comfortable and you could tell they practiced there speeches because they did not refer to their cards very often. I thought they both did a very fine job.
Next up is our persausive speeches. I must say that i am excited to hear what each student has to talk about. I will use my video tape to fix certian things i did wrong in my informative speech. This video was a good idea. I will present my residual message by stating that i believe my audience should learn a special topic in order to be safer. I will be using the problema and solution method for my main topics. I will be using websites, books and magazines for my resources.
After reading Logan's blog, I feel that if he keeps up his hard work and effort, he should get another good grade for his persuasive speech. His informative speech went very well and did a nice job explaining the information and drawing a diagram. He just needs to make sure that he goes over his speech a couple of times so he knows not to read off of his notecards. He did a good job of this for his informatifve speech, but if i had to give him something to work on this would be it.
The next blog i read was Mike. Once again, here is a student where you can tell he takes the time to practice his speech and organize his notes. He does a great job picking topics that he is passionate about and knows about the information. If I had to tell Mike something to remember about his next speech, it would have to be that he just needs to be more relaxed. He is a good speaker and he just needs to remember that, and he will do just fine I'm sure!
For both of these speakers, I feel that the most important thing is to pick a topic you really care about and want you audience to know and learn. You can always tell when a speaker is passionate about a topic, and that grabs an audience's attention right away! Good luck everyone!
Congradulations class on a job well done with the speechs. This week we finished them up and I was very impressed. On monday my group and I gave our speeches, and I thought we did a very nice job, and on Wednesday group four did their speeches and they did a good job to. I noticed that we all had good projection and confidence. I believe that everyone in the class is becoming more relaxed in giving a speech becasue we now know the proper way, and everyone is in the same boat. Also, the speechs that were given this week were all very interesting. I found out a lot of really interesting information.
It is hard to just pick speechs that I liked, becasue everyone did such a great job, but if I had to pick two I would say Jenifer and Dannys. Jenifer's speech was so organized, and very easy to undersatnd. Her volume was good and she had good eye contact with the whole class. Also, her topic was interesting about Dairy. Alos, she had a good amount of audience analysis, and supporting facts. Danny's speech was good because he looked very relazed, and he had good facts. Alos, I liked how he had a mouth and tooth brush where he actually showed you the proper way to bursh your teeth. With the prop it interested the audience more into his speech, and allowed him to not worry about his note cards.
For my informative speech I plan on telling the class that seat belt safty is very important. I want to show all of you how important it is to wear a seat belt. I am going to us problem solution and tell you what can happen to you if you dont wear a seat belt. One big problem that a lot of people have is the thought, it wont ever happen to me, well that isn't true and I hope I can convince you all to wear one from now on.
Next week we all start the same process again, of giving speeches, and by the audience analysis handed out, I know that the speeches will be interesting.I know that everyone will do a nice job delievering their speeches. Good luck to everyone who are working on your speeches!
Sorry everyone my blog was suppose to say for my persuasive speech I plan on telling you how important seat belt safety is, not my informative speech.
I want to first off congratulate everyone for outstanding informative speeches. We’ve all definitely come a long way since the beginning of the class. It shows with our ability to speak in front of the class without being nervous, and also finally understanding how to use all the applications properly.
It’s hard to really pick out of them all which speeches I thought were the best. But, since this week we have to pick two, I’d have to say that I really enjoyed Danny and Logan’s speeches.
Danny used great visuals in his speech. First he started with handout that explained the steps of properly brushing your teeth. Following the handout, he showed us with a demonstration using a huge set of teeth and a toothbrush. I felt that this kept the audience’s focus on the topic as well as making the speech entertaining. Danny also backed up his information with a good amount of sources. Making his speech very credible.
Logan’s speech was another favorite of mine. His two strongest points was his delivery and his visuals. His delivery was smooth and calm. He knew a lot about his topic and looked very comfortable standing in front of the class speaking about it. His visual was also a nice touch. It allowed the audience to really understand the process of taking methane from garbage and turning into natural gas.
From my persuasive speech, I’ll be talking about gas mileage and what you can do to help improve gas mileage on your vehicle. I’ll present my residual message by tying in audience analysis. Most of resources for my speech will come from the Internet and a few databases.
All right, ha-ha, so I totally forgot to let you guys know my speech is going to be in the problem solution structure. But, I’m going to remain on task and make suggestions for Kristine and Danny’s persuasive speech ideas.
Kristine, you have a great idea with seat belt safety. I know a lot of my friends who don’t wear their seat belts. I’m expecting you’ll be able to use a lot of your audience analysis with this. Also, finding information to back your reasons is going to be easy for you. Seeing how I’m sure thousands of people who die from car accidents weren’t wearing a seat belt. There isn’t much I can say about what you can improve on from your last speech. You’re speech was very professional and also very informative. But, I have faith that you can outdo yourself and get a great grade.
Danny, you also have a very intriguing topic. Self-defense was a hot topic, and still remains a topic among mostly females. I know you’ll be able to find a lot of information about people who have been mugged and other useful information. Also, you’re audience analysis will be able to tie in extremely well with this speech. Again, like Kristine’s speech, you don’t have much to improve. The only suggestion I could make is just to maybe include a little more audience analysis. Make the audience feel really involved, but also keep the entertaining aspect you had with your informative speech
I would just like to start by commending everybody on a job well done on your informative speeches. I though as a whole the class did a very good job on gathering information and organizing it into their speeches and then presenting it. I could see a huge improvement between the first two ungraded speeches and the informative speech. I thought everybody who went the first week did a good job on their speeches and the students who presented this previous week followed them up very nicely. I thought all of the speeches were interesting and I gained new insight on a variety of subjects that I knew very little about before.
After reading Mike’s blog I realized how much Jimmy’s speech on stress and ways to manage it was actually a basis for the other speeches that Kaitlin and Josh presented. Jimmy told about stress and how it arises and how to deal with it, and just as Mike said that corresponded very nicely with what Josh had to say because Josh’s speech was about exercising, and I agree with Mike that exercising is a tremendous way to relieve stress. Kaitlin’s speech related very well with Jimmy’s also because she told about dinking and how some people use that to deal with stress. Kaitlin’s speech informed people of the negative ways to deal with stress and Josh’s told about the positive ways to deal with stress. So if you think about it all of the speeches were tied together in a certain aspect. Mike also had a very good point that if Jimmy’s speech would have been first it would have set a nice form of ground work for the other two speeches. People should also take note of the last item of Mike’s speech which deals with the persuasive speeches which is in chapter 20 it lists four critical steps to ensure that your presentation achieves its purpose as 1) match your purpose to your passion 2) build strong arguments 3) clarify your claims 4) use persuasive evidence.
I completely agree with Kristin that Danny and Jennifer had two of the best informative speeches. I really liked Danny’s speech because it was a topic that seemed kind of comical at first because honestly who would of though about doing an informative speech on how to brush your teeth. However, I feel that Danny did a tremendous job presenting his information. He made his speech interesting by using a handout and also a visual aid, which was a big set of teeth and toothbrush that he used to show the proper way to brush. I feel that this speech was very well done he used good audience analysis and supporting material and he also seemed to be very knowledgeable about his subject. The second speech that I liked, just as Kristin did, was Jennifer’s speech on dairy products. I found this to be a very interesting speech as well, and Jennifer did an outstanding job on presenting her information. She was very organized throughout her entire speech which contained a lot of information. During her speech she had good use of audience analysis and kept very good eye contact through out the entire presentation as well. Just like Danny, Jennifer was also very knowledgeable on her subject and that showed in her presentation. Also, in Kristin’s blog I noticed her topic for her persuasive speech which is seatbelt safety. I believe that this is a very good topic for this speech because there are a lot of people out there who do not wear their seatbelts every time they get in a vehicle. If I were to give some suggestions on this topic I would say to use a variety of examples that can result by a person not wearing their seatbelt and who were in a car accident then also use some examples of people who were involved in a car accident and had their seatbelt on. That is just a suggestion, but I am sure that Kristin’s speech will contain a lot of information and be very persuasive.
I had a hard time deciding on a topic for my persuasive speech but I have found one that I think might be a good one. It is to persuade people to exercise on a consistent basis to help them become healthier which will in turn lead them to a longer healthier life. I think I am going to use something along the lines of problem and solution for my speech. I want to tell of the problems that can arise from living a sedentary lifestyle, and how to avoid these problems through exercise and physical activity. A lot of people in society today are depriving themselves of exercise and it is showing in their overall health.
The last thing I would like to say, is Good Luck to everyone on their persuasive speeches, I am looking forward to hearing them all.
After reading the other peoples blogs I realized that everyone has a good topic. The two blogs I want to comment on are Kevin's and Will's. Both of their topics seem quite interesting.
Kevin your speech seems very interesting becasue everyone faces chanllenges of exercise in their daily activity. I believe it would be a good idea to give statistics of people who do exercise daily and others who dont do anything. I believe that woud be a real eye opener for people. That is just a suggestion though.
Will your speech topic on gas milage and how you can imporve is a very good topic because gas is so expensive now. I think it would be interesting to know what vehicles give the best gas milage and which give the worst. I think that would help you to realte to everyone becasue everyone in the class drives a different kind of vehical!
Once again good luck to everyone on your speeches and have a good rest of the weekend.
I thought everyone did a wonderful job on their informative speeches. I do feel that we are able to use our sources and audience analyze.
Jimmy's speech was on stress. THe speech was very well done. I thought it was very structured and very well put together. Also I like how he used the sources and audience analyze. Also he talked how to deal and manage stress which was very informative. That group kind of had all their speeches go together with the ones that I saw. Jimmy's speech was very informative.
Kaitlin's speech was on drinking and college students. I thought was very well done and organized. The speech was very informative about college students and drinking. Kaitlin's and Jimmy's speech seemed to go together with them both talking about stress. Jimmy focused on how to maintain and deal with the stress and Kaitlin talked about why some of the college students drink because they are stressed out.
For my persuasive speech I am going to do it on nutrition. Because the number of college students being obese has double in the past ten years. The main reason for that is that universities are using fast food places like Wendy's and other places like that and not promoting health eating habits.
Everyone has done very well on their informative speeches. As everyone has already mention, every speech is getting better and better as each group goes up and speaks.
My two favorite speeches had to be Jennifer's and Kristin's speeches. They both were very very well done and executed. They had showed excellent use of audience analysis and their supports were amazing. Their deliver had been exceptional along with their tone and topics. They had put everything together and the speeched flowed together along with being able follow along due to the awesome organization they had.
My persuasive speech topic I think is going to be that we should vote to change the term of the president from 4 year or two terms to a single six year term.
I think the informative speeches all went very well for being our first real graded speech. I thought what everyone did a very good job of was that everyone picked topics that they knew a lot about and were very knowledgeable. Each topic was very informative and being a listener took in some very useful information for the future. My favorite speakers of the class would probably be Mike and Danny. They both did very nice jobs, were very well prepared, and seemed very comfortable standing and speaking in front of the class. As a whole the class seems as though we are all coming along with their speeches, and I have high expectations for what should be expected from our pursuasive speeches.
As our informative speeches are over with, I think they were very successful. Everyone did a very nice job on the speeches. They were all very informative and I learned something from each of them. The speeches that were given this week were very nice.
The two speeches that I especially liked this week was Danny's and Kristen's . I enjoyed listening to them give their speeches. I thought Danny did a great job with his visual aids. It is one thing to tell the audience how your supposed to brush, but to have the big teeth and toothbrush made it easier for us all to understand. Also the handout went along nicely to with his demonstration. I thought that Kristen had a very interesting topic. I found it to be very informative. I never knew that popcorn bags and plastic wrap in the microwave were bad for your health. I recently went to the store and got some popcorn, and I bought the kind that you put on the stove, and it was just as good as the ones in the microwave. Her speech was one of the ones that stuck in my head.
The persuasive speeches are coming very fast for us , and by the sounds of it, there will be a lot of very good topics. I think that a persuasive speech is a little bit harder to find a good topic.
Of topics that some of you have mentioned, I think that Kristen's topic of seat belt safety will be a good speech. It is something that not many people realize the importance of until its to late. I also think that Brandon's topic about the Presidential term will also be an interesting one.
Hello Class
I thought that the informative speeches finished up very nicely. I am sure that people are relieved to get that first graded speech out of the way. I was the very first to present my speech, but honestly, I can see how there are positives and negatives to going last for each speech topic. Going last is a benefit to gaining some knowledge on what other speakers are doing well or not so well on. However, by going last you are probably being measured more critically.
The first speech I would like to talk about is Logan’s speech—which dealt with garbage disposal and the collection of methane gas. I can’t say exactly everything that was pointed out, but, I thought that the use of the chalk board was exceptionally helpful. I consider myself a “visual learner” so this useful aid made the topic easier for me to understand and brought value to his speech. Also, his structure seemed to be in very good order- plus he cited his sources well.
Next I would like to discuss Danny’s speech which dealt with the importance of dental hygiene. Again, I need to point out the use of a visual aid, in particular, the use of the large set of teeth and the toothbrush. Danny also had good structure with his speech and he developed his points well by using the proper sources to enhance his sub points. Furthermore, he seems to be extremely comfortable in front of the class, which I am envious of.
I wish that I could have commented on the other speeches but these two stuck out more to me than the rest. Most likely, because of the use of visual aids and because I was peer critiquing them so I paid a little closer attention to them. The other speeches, I sat back and tried to be a good listener for.
Next, I would like to discuss my plan for my persuasive speech—I’m still not 100% sure of my sub points but I think that I am going to speak about aggressive driving and try to persuade some of you to be more courteous drivers while out on the road. As was expected, so far 100% of the class indicated in my audience analysis that they had experienced “road rage” while driving. Even Dr. Pam admitted a mild form of road rage while driving to school on Friday. I believe that my main points that I want to discuss are aggressive driving (sub points: why people drive aggressively and negative results of driving aggressively) and suggestions to driving less aggressively (helpful tips and benefits to being more courteous). Like I mentioned, I am still not 100% sure of my sub points, but once I begin my research I may change things a bit.
Now I’d like to turn the table and discuss the blogs that we had to write the last two weeks. Dr Pam, you encourage us to use this blog as a billboard to express our thoughts and expand on our creative thinking. So here it goes… First, I would like to point out that I am not against writing for these blogs, but whether you know it or not, I put some time into these postings. Maybe it does not sound like a big deal to you to sit down and write a couple pages for a blog but I put a lot of thought into what I am writing and it takes time. Second, a little more notice would be nice. I feel bad that I am unable to compliment the earlier speakers but I didn’t know that that was going to be your protocol. Honestly, if I would have known on Monday I was writing a blog on other speeches, I would have prepared accordingly. Dr. Pam, I am your only adult learner in this class and I don’t consider myself on the same playing field as the other students. I rely on preparation and work ethic to achieve my academic goals while balancing a full time job, and a home life with my high maintenance wife (hehehe) and three children. My point is, I cannot fly by the seat of my pants. With all due respect, we were instructed to read our syllabus and follow it as though it was our bible for CAS100. In the syllabus it says: “participate in weekly blogs”—all semester it has been understood to be a short one to two paragraphs about something that we learned in class that week and how it applies to our speeches. Now, two weeks in a row, we’re writing 2-3 page papers about speeches and we are expected to do it with little notice.
I’m not trying to sound like I’m ungrateful, because I do feel as though this class is beneficial to my future career, and I am not afraid to do the work-I would just like to have a little notice so I can give you the 100% I committed to. Since I am being completely honest with you, I fully intended to spend the majority of my weekend preparing my persuasive speech. As I stated to you in my self-critique sheet, I felt I could have delivered a better informative speech if I would have practiced more. My goal was to have my speech written by Wednesday, and then have one full week to practice before my presentation.
In Economics class we learned about opportunity cost which is defined as any choice is the foregone value of the next best alternative. Well the choice to invest a couple of hours in this week’s blog assignment rather than work on my persuasive speech is not the best allocation of my resources.
Sorry my blogs late everyone. My girlfriend was in the hospital and im just getting home right now and it's almost 12:30 AM and im beat.
Anyways, i want to first tell everybody great job on their informative speeches. I think they all went well and i think that any criticisms that we received from peers and from Dr Pam will help us out a lot for our persuasive speeches. However, let me talk about the two speeches that i found interesting.
The first speech that i want to talk about is Danny's speech on the proper way to brush and care for your teeth. Danny did a great job in the delivery of the speech. I could hear him perfect and he seemed to be very comfortable and relaxed while giving his speech. His tone wasnt jumping all over the place either. I also liked the handout he gave us when he was doing the demo with the teeth and the tooth brush. The props that he had, the teeth and the toothbrush, were great!! They really brought the speech to life. Plus he seemed to be very knowledgeable about the topic too. It was almost as if he was actually a dentist or something. Danny did a great job with his speech.
The next speech i want to talk about is Logan's speech and how the landfill produces methane gas from garbage. Logan was very knowledgeable with the topic and he seems to have a great interest in the landfill and with the methane gas that is present as well. The drawing that Logan did was great. I mean i had an idea about what the landfill did with the gas but it was never really clear to me. So, the drawing he did was great because he gave me a clear vision of how the gas was dealt with and what the landfill does with it too. Logan also had great delivery in his speech. I could hear him loud and clear and his tone was good too. It wasnt all over the place. But logan did a great job in his speech.
Now just because I picked those two speeches doesnt mean that i didnt like the rest of them. THey were all good speeches so i dont want anyone to feel bad because i didnt pick theirs. ahaha
Next, i want ot talk about my next upcoming speech,my persuasive speech. Im not really sure how i am going to start my speech off. Its going to interesting to hear other people's speeches and listen to how they present there speech. I am anxious to hear them. My persuasive speech will be about becoming an organ donor. I want you guys to realize just how important being an organ donor can be. When you are no longer alive what good are the organs going to be to you?? Its not like you can use them ever again. SO i want you to know that you should become and organ donor and the importance of it.Im not sure what resources i am going to use at the moment and im not really sure how to set my speech up and stuff like that.
Alright well there are two blogs that i want to respond to. The first one is Mike's. Mike the topic you want to talk about is AWESOME!!! I think ur persuasvie speech is going to be great however you have it structured. It is going to be a real eye opener not only for me, but for many more too. I know myself have really bad roadrage. I mean i know im not the best driver out there but when people do shit it makes me mad and sometimes i let my emotions get the better of me. So, i am interested in hearing what you have to say about aggressive driving.
The second speech i want to talk about is Brandon's. The reason I chose to talk about Brandon's is simply because i dont really understand politics that much and honestly i could care less. I have to many other things on my mind. However, Brandon i hope that you can enlighten me some on some of the politics. I dont know much at all so its goin to be hard to persuade me to do or believe anything.
Well i want to wish everyone good luck on their upcoming speeches and i hope all goes well
Hello Students. It is wonderful to see how fabulous your blogs have become! I realize that the past few weeks have added some stress to your already busy schedules so when I asked you to blog more intensively, it was for the purpose of getting "some" of you out of the "comfortable" zone of regurgitating chapter material or from writing repetitiously as it seemed for some. I appreciate the point that Michael makes too - that he has a good work ethic by necessity because of his non-traditional status - in having a wife and children that take precedence. So I must apologize also for the added expectation that I have put on the last two week's blogging expectations. I will actually skip a week in your blogging assignment for this week to make up for it. However, on Friday, April 11th (no class that day), I will expect a lengthy blog that critiques all of the persuasive speeches as we have done the last two weeks.
Now let me also remind you all that when the syllabus is distributed, we professors reserve the right to make changes. Change is inevitable as the semester develops because as in this case, when I realized that the blogs were going no where, I had to make changes to stimulate the assignment and ultimately to help you earn a better grade for it. I hope this explains why I have done this. And again, I appreciate any and all criticisms you pass on to me about the class or my teaching techniques....it provides me valuable feedback as I respect your viewpoints. It also helps me to be better at what I do. Thanks much! Dr. Pamela
hello class
I hope that you all had a good weeknend and were able to accomplish the task which you set out to complete.
As a follow up to my earlier blog I would like to comment on some of the other persausive speeches being prepared.
First I would like to discuss kevins topic which I really like, throughout my life I have tried to remain on an exercise regimine consistently put it always seems like when time becomes short the first thing your willing to sacrifice is your exercise routine. Kevin if its possible I would really like to hear about motivational techniques to get you through those lulls or ways to keep your workouts interesting.
Next I would like to discuss jessica's topic which is on nutrition. Again this is something I find very interesting as food can provide you with many benefits which alot of people are not aware of. To me one of the most interesting things about the subject is how food can be compared to the fuel you put in your car,if you dont put the right fuel in your car it wont run to its optimum performance, much like the body. If I were to suggest anything which may help with your speech I would say I think its important to stress the importance of eating at least three meals a day, maybe you could persuade people to at the very least to eat breakfast which is the most important meal of the day. maybe back that up by telling them most people sleep seven or more hours if you dont eat for a couple hours before you go to bed that could be anywhere from ten to tweleve hours depending on how long you sleep. All the while your body's burning calories even while sleeping. When you wake up you need to fill your tank to give your body the fuel it needs to give you energy. I hope this was helpful good luck with your persuasive speeches.
Last I would like to thank you dr. Pam for not overreacting to my earlier blog, I wasn't trying to upset anyone its just that I feel that I have been able to excell in classes where I knew ahead of time what was expected of me.I do try to get my work done ahead of time so I dont feel rushed. As I have advanced in age surprises have become associated with more bad things then good.
Congratulations everyone and thank god we are done with speech number 2. I was very pleased with how everyone did and i feel that everyone did a very good job. I personally feel that everyone did a good job that was deserving of at least a high B grade and most were in the mid to high A category.
I personally liked Wills introduction/attention getter when he pulled out his wallet looking for cash. it was very creative i thought and i feel that i even kind of pushed him to do it with my introduction in my speech directly before his. like i said i personally feel everyone did very well and i now at this point cant pick a certain one that sticks out because i feel we are all close to the same level now in speech giving. Now im sure the grades recieved may not reflect what im saying but i would like to finish this thought by saying congrats and great job everyone on the speeches.
Now i feel that with going in the first group i did pretty well with the lack of examples to watch and stuff. but i still noticed on my grade sheet little things that were not pointed out before. for example, i was told this time about my shirt not being tucked in but if anyone would recall i wore the exact same thing for both speeches so i do not know how i can be expected to improve my dress if not told about it in the previous speech?
after watching what worked of my recording i feel that i did pretty good but am still kind of sore about the grade i recieved because some things like my dress were brought up that were not previously brought up. other than the obvious things needed in a persuasive speech i tried my best to keep my speech to the same ideas as my previous one because i recieve an A on that speech. but i am really bummed out about this and kind of mad still. i will admit.
as we move on to the third speeches i really dont know if i want or if anyone wants to hear about recycling again. but something i have heard from other students has me curious. if i recall correctly i heard that if the average grade of your two speeches is an A you dont have to do the third speech. but now ive overheard that those who have recieved back to back A's still have to give a third speech. when was this taken out of effect?
I would like to apologize if i seem a bit out of line in tone or anything of that nature. i just feel that i along with others may have been told one thing and expected to do another. but i guess thats life i suppose.
To conclude i was pleased with the speeches personally and thought everyone did great and look forward to seeing how great everyone will do on the third ones and as far as informative topics go does anyone have any ideas that might work for a better speech than to hear my persuasive recycling speech again? if so e-mail them to me at ljy113@psu.edu
First off I would like to say congradulations to everyone on doing such a wonderul job with speeches. I give everyone credit because I know its not easy to go up and give a speech, but you all did great. Each one of you brought something interesting to the speeches. I went first for the persuasive speeches, and I hope I was able to persuade everyone to now wear a seat belt. Danny's speech was interesting on self defense, and he did a great job on organization and he had good sources. Will's topic gas was very good. It was a good idea since gas prices are so high. His attention getter was very good, and I thought he imporved greatly from his last speech, especially since he didn't go over his time limit this time. Logan's speech on recycleing was very intersting. I recycle myself, but I didn't realize how many differnet things could be recycled. Also, his attnetion getter was really good, and I really liked his power point.
Group 4 was the next group to go and they also did a good job. Caitlin's speech was good on giving blood. She explained that giving blood could help save at least 5 lives, and that really got me thinking. Also, her powerpoint presentation really added to her speech. Jimmy's speech was good on being an organ doner. His credability he stated about his uncle needing an organ transplant really made his topic personal, and Josh's speech was good abotu not using tobacco. That is such a big problem, and the story that put in his speech about that guy who had to lose half of his neck becasue he ended up getting cancer put some good reality in his speech.
Group 2 was next and you all did so good. Kevin's speech on physical activity was very interesting. It was very organized, and he had a lot of audience analysis, and sources. Also, his credability he stated was good, because physical activity is important to him. Brandon's speech on budgeting was quite interesting. The hand out he gave us was a nice touch to his speech, and it reall opened my eyes to how much everything costs these days. Jennipher's speech on sleep was very interesting. It really made me think on how I really need to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Her speech was very organized, and she used a lot of audience anlaysis. Also, her tone and volume was very good. Clifton's speech was very interesting. I didn't realize how many different orgnaizations there are. He also looked profession, and had good eye contact.
Group 1 you all did a good job. Mike's speech was very good. It was organized, interesting, and he looked very professional. I especially liked in his speech when he would talk about other peoples speeches, it really made his speech more personal. Also, his topic was very good becasue I myself get road rage. Jessica's speech was good about nutrition. She really got you thinking about how bad a lot of us eat, now that we are in college. Also, she looked professional. Finally, Ashley's speech was very interesting as well. I really enjoyed her power point presentation. It got me hooked, and her volume was very good. I didn't know that much about heart worms until her speech.
Needless to say everyone did an awesome job on their speeches. From giving our informative speech to our persuasive speech, they have improved greatly. Everyone including myself seems so much more relaxed and confident. Also, the speeches are so much more organzied and professional.
With giving our final speeches I hope that everyone can improve from their last one. If anyone has any suggestions on what they think would be a good topic for me on my final speech, please dont hesitate to let me know. I have to make a new speech for my final because I got an A on both of mine, so I have to do a whole new speech, and I could use some suggestions. I hope that everyone has a good weekend, and good luck preparing your final speeches!
First i would like to tell everybody great job on the speeches. With each speech i get more and more impressed when i listen to them. I cant believe how much everybody has given better speeches. I think that watching your video that was recorded also helps because you get to watch the weak areas of your speech.
I want to talk about some speeches that really stuck out to me. The first speech is Mikes. I really liked Mikes speech on agressive driving. I know myself am a agressive driver. Just last nite a car was high beaming and i high beamed them back and i know that when somebody does something stupid it pisses me off. Mike had some very good facts and the sources he used were great. I really liked the fact that Mike was so into the topic he seemed very knowledgeable as well.
The next speech that i want to talk about is Ashley's speech about heartworms. I have a 1 year old golden retriever. She is just so cute and loveable. I have taken her to the vet and all that to get shots and spaded and things think that. At one of the visits they gave me some heartworm medicine to give to her. I was never really sure whay heartworms were until Ashley's speech. Ashley was very up to date with the topic and i lilke being able to learn what heartworms are. I am suppose to give my dog the medicine every month. I am going to pay closer attention the illness that pets may encounter. My dog is my best friend and i am going to try to keep her healthy and keep her safe.
Finally, i want to talk a little bit about speech class itself. The speech class overall was very helpful, however, the class has some flaws. Sometimes in class we were told to do one thing but then when the time came we had do another. To me the class at times was confusing and didnt seem totally in order but the class overall was very helpful.
I want to wish everybody good luck on their final speeches and hope that everybody has a good weekend.
I want to let everyone know what a wonderful job they did with their persuasive speeches. I think everyone improved greatly from their last speeches and I’m hoping they improve even more when it comes to the final speeches. I feel like everyone is getting more comfortable standing in front of the class, which in the end will hopefully help you whenever you have to give a speech in real life.
I was the last person to go in Group 3, which I just want to say was very hard to get everything prepared on such sort time span between the speeches. I felt very comfortable giving my speech this time, and I think it’s from getting familiar with everyone in the class. Also, Kristin gave our group some inspiration to improve this time, ha-ha. Kristin did an absolutely wonderful job on her speech. The visual aids really helped her deliver her point of getting us all to wear our seat belts. Danny’s speech was also good with his topic of self defense. I know self defense would come in handy when going into a bad neighborhood. Logan’s speech was also good with his persuasion of getting us to recycle more. You hear more about it as the consumption of power increases every year.
Group 4 followed us with an exceptional speech from Jimmy and Caitlin. Jimmy’s speech was very emotional and he connected very well. I’ve never had a relative be in need of an organ, but I’m sure it’s rough to go through knowing he could never get the surgery. Caitlin picked a topic that seems to be very popular on this campus with donating blood. The visual aids were good, and so was the support. I myself wanted to give blood, but my tattoo keeps holding me back from donating. Josh’s speech ties in with how I feel with my dad. I think tobacco use is disgusting and I’m hoping someday he’ll quit.
Group 2 followed up with speeches from Brandon, Cliff, Kevin, and Jennifer. Jennifer did an incredible job. She tied in her audience analysis very well with her support. I feel she persuaded everyone to drink more milk now. Brandon had great eye contact with his speech on budgeting, which I’m sure every one of us will need here soon enough. Cliff’s speech on volunteer work was good. I think he needs to improve on his support and maybe direct it a little more towards persuading the audience to actually volunteer. Kevin’s speech helped tie in with his informative speech on working out. I already know I want to go out and lift to help make myself feel better mentally and physically.
Group 1 was but not least. Mike started and gave an amazing speech on aggressive driving. I don’t find myself an aggressive driver, but Mike’s story of how the guy got killed just for confronting someone about an object flying from his vehicle, well that made me want to avoid aggressive driving altogether. Ashley hit a very emotional topic when she talked about heartworm prevention. I know I love my dogs and would do anything to keep them safe and healthy. Jessica’s speech was good. She needs to get more support to help persuade students to try and lay off the junk food.
In conclusion everyone did great on their speeches. I’m looking forward to how people will improve previous speeches and maybe even come up with new ones for those who got A’s. Well I’ll see everyone in class on Monday. Have a safe and wonderful weekend.
I would also like to start out by saying congrats to everybody on their persuasive speeches. I have seen alot of us improving on every speech.
There were alot of great speeches that we heard and seen but the couple of speeches that I liked the most would be Mike's speech on Road Rage and Will's speech on how to save gas by changing our driving habits.
Mike's speech caught me right away and never left my attention. His facts and statistics were unbelieveable. His facts and method of persuasion actual made me become a less aggressive driver but I still get that urge but then I think back to Mike's speech and the fatalities that come from aggressive driving. He had good sources along with excellent audience analysis. His emotional appeal was very well done with that story he told us. His conclusion was really well done because he put the effort in to make a little slogan for his "campaign."
Now on to Will's speech. His attention getter was a bit creative looking for money in an empty wallet. His audience analysis was goo but his sources were excellent. His organization was really easy to follow but his internal summaries really helped with planting the main points in your mind.
Now my speech could be improved. My audience analysis was weak again even though I had them there to say I had forgotten them while I was speaking. My biggest problem would be speech anxiety. I can not over come this and keep my nerves in check. Anyone else still have this problem?
I would like to tell everyone that they did an awesome job on their speeches. I have learned a lot about everyone and what they are concerned about. As we do the speeches everyone has improved with the delivery and everything else. Also I found that the self evaluation is very helpful and the video helps us to see what we need to improve on.
The speeches that stuck out for me the most was Jennifer's speech about sleeping, Mikes speech about aggressive driving, Danny's speech about self-defense, and Ashley's . Jennifer's speech was very persuading to get the right amount of sleep. Also she talked about how to make you're sleeping environment more relaxing and easier for us to fall asleep. I found her speech to be informative, but persuasive at the same time. She used a lot of good sources. Now Mikes speech about aggressive driving, I may be a little bit of an aggressive drive, since I do travel frequently to state college and Pittsburgh. On the other hand I would much rather be an aggressive drive than a passive driver. However Mike showed what can happen when you make someone mad on the road and I try not to do that unless someone really gets under my skin. On to Danny's speech about self-defense, I know how important it is to be able to defend yourself. When I was younger my brother thought me to defend myself. However, I really never need to know how to because of my brother and his reputation. I find its good to know how to defend yourself if you need to. Now Ashley's speech on heart warms, I currently have four dogs they think they are part of the family. My family kept up with the heart worm treatment for a year or so, however we stop the treatment for the heart worm. My family is not very concerned about them getting heart worms because of where we live and there is worse things they can get into. Also the area around here does not have that many case of heart worm. I do think that Ashley did an amazing job about persuading everyone to treat their pets for heart worms. She gave a lot of good information.
I wish everyone good luck on their next speech.
Hello class,
For starters I would just like to say that the persuasive speeches went very well. I thought everyone did a fabulous job. There’s no doubt that practice does make you a better speaker. I can’t speak for everyone but I felt much more comfortable this time around then the first with the informative speech. Unfortunately I missed the group 4 speeches which were given by Kaitlin, Jimmy, Josh, so I will be unable to comment on their topics. In talking with the other class members I was at least able to find out what their topics where about. Overall it seemed that all the groups did very well on structuring their speeches. It is easier to follow along with the speaker when you understand the structure that’s being used. The speakers also seemed like they used their audience analysis a lot more this time around. I know when I wrote my speech it was nice to speak about something which you had researched and also had the opportunity to ask your audience about prior to presenting your speech. There is no doubt that a good audience analysis can be extremely helpful when writing a speech. I think the hardest thing I found about writing the persuasive speech was trying to find a way to stir emotion (pathos) for your topic.
I believe next we are supposed to talk about our two favorite speeches; again I apologize to group 4 for missing your speeches. First I think I would like to talk about Wil’s speech which was about gas mileage. I really liked what Wil did for his attention getter, it was creative and also many people can relate with an empty wallet. His use of sources was done well and after talking about global warming the first time around he clearly has the best interest of the planet in mind. I thought that some of tips which were offered were helpful and the topic of gas mileage is something which should be taken very seriously.
I also liked Brandon’s speech about the importance of budgeting. I was never real big on budgeting until about a year or so ago. He brought up some points which can’t be ignored. I also liked how he gave us a template to begin budgeting as soon as possible. Speaking from experience of managing a household it is a heck of a lot less stressful if you know what’s coming in and what’s going out. Brandon used a plethora of sources throughout his speech and seemed genuinely interested about helping other people manage their finances. Being in a major that focuses on finance I could relate with his topic.
Well this upcoming week will certainly be interesting, I’m not sure what Monday is going to be like as far as the impromptu speeches. I know that I prefer to prepare as much as possible before I speak, but I’m sure this exercise will be helpful in case you ever have to give a speech with little preparation. I am looking forward to listening to everyone’s final speeches as I believe they will all be very good. I hope everyone has a nice weekend and will see ya Monday.
I would like to start by congratulating everybody on your persuasive speeches I thought as a whole the class did a really good job. Once again everybody amazed me by how much they improved from the informative speech to the persuasive. Like I said in my previous blog, I thought everybody improved greatly from the first couple speeches to the informative. After that the speeches were taken to another level for the persuasive speeches. I feel overall the persuasive speeches were the best ones up to this point, but we have had a lot of practice leading up to this point and we all have been critiqued rather hard so this may have been a benefit too. The class took the constructive criticism from the previous speech and applied it to the persuasive speech and in my opinion improved them dramatically. I think if the type of improvement that was made between the informative and persuasive speeches is made between the persuasive speech and the next one everybody’s grades will dramatically be improved because the speeches would be near perfect.
The persuasive speeches started off with a bang when Kristin presented her very persuasive speech on seat belt safety. I think this was a great topic to choose for this speech because it is one that effects more people than not. I hate to admit it but up until Kristin’s speech I was one of the majorities of people who did not buckle up every time I got in a vehicle. After listening to her speech I make it a priority now to buckle up as soon as I get in the vehicle. Her speech overall was in my opinion perfect. She started off on the right foot by looking and sounding very professional. She then used a great amount of audience analysis to relate her topic to the class. Another thing she used great was supporting details; I really liked how she used the results of actual events to help prove her point of how important seat belts really are. She presented a lot of information and kept it all very well organized. This was a very persuasive speech and if you do not wear your seatbelt now because of it there is nothing out there that can convince you to.
Danny was in the first group to present and he did a tremendous job following up Kristin’s speech with one of his own, which was on self defense. This was another very persuasive speech because nobody really gives any thought to the dangers that can arise out in society and what to do if they are ever faced with a dangerous situation. I think everybody that heard this speech should at least think of the possibility that they can be assaulted at any given time and they should be prepared to handle the situation. Danny used excellent statistics to support his information which was also excellently organized. He seemed like he did a lot of research towards his topic and it could show in his overall presentation, it was very well done. Logan’s speech was also extremely persuasive and very well done. I can honestly say that I have never recycled before but after listening to Logan I am seriously considering it. I really like how he used his power point because he referred to it but he did not rely on it. Logan did a very good job in my opinion with his speech, but after reading some of the other blogs and listening to some of the people talk I am a little shocked that some of the things he was docked points on in the persuasive speech was not addressed in the informative speech. I believe that everybody’s speeches should be critiqued the same, in the sense that every little thing that can be improved on for the next speech should be brought to that person’s attention instead of keeping it a secret until they get their next grade sheet back. That is just my opinion because I like many others feel that we should be helped to improve our speeches and the grades should increase not decrease. Will finished the speeches up in his group and did a stand out job as well. I agree completely with Logan that his attention getter was very creative, I like it a lot. He was very well organized throughout his entire speech and used very good supporting information in making his speech as persuasive as it could be.
The next group which went was also very persuasive. Caitlin gave a speech on persuading people to give blood. I thought this too was a very good topic because donating blood is very important because it can possibly save someone’s life someday. Caitlin used her power point very nicely and used a lot of good supporting information to strengthen her point. Caitlin I have never given blood yet, I have been signed up to give it before, but I was not able to attend the blood drive but I will definitely be donating some in the near future. Jimmy was in Caitlin’s group and his speech was kind of along the same lines as Caitlin’s but his was trying to persuade people to become organ donors. I agree with Kristin that Jimmy had really good credibility because he made it personal by telling of his uncle. His speech was very well organized and he looked and sounded very professional when he presented it. Josh finished up his groups speeches with one on tobacco. This was a good topic because it is one that affects people all throughout society. Josh’s supporting story about the guy who lost like pretty much half his face should really help people consider quitting using tobacco. His organization was also very well throughout his entire speech.
The third group that went was the group that I was in. Jennifer started our group’s speeches by going first. Her speech was to persuade people to try and get more sleep. This is a matter that affects almost every student in some way. She used really good examples of what could happen if someone does not receive enough sleep. She also used a good deal of supporting material and her she presented her topic like a true professional that had been giving speeches for years. Brandon went second in our group and his speech was trying to persuade people to budget their money better. I thought he stated his credibility very well by telling the audience about his parent’s history of lousy budgeting skills and how he has been budgeting his own money since he has been sixteen years old. I also really liked how he presented the class with a copy of their own blank budgeting form that should really help in the process of people budgeting their money better. I went third in our group and I tried to persuade people to perform more physical activity. I told about how obesity and health risks can arise from the lack of physical activity and how to prevent these problems through physical activity and healthy eating habits. I believe my speech went very well, but I did go over by 19 seconds but other than that I was happy with it. Cliffton was the last one to present in our group and he tried to persuade people do more volunteer work. He was very persuasive and he accomplished this by looking and sounding professional and being well organized.
The last group to give their speeches was also a very outstanding group. Mike’s speech on aggressive driving was one of the top persuasive speeches given in my opinion. Mike looked and sounded like a true professional and he seemed very knowledgeable about his topic. He uses great supporting information and incidents that showed how dangerous aggressive driving really is. Another thing he did which I really like was he referred to other people’s speeches and told of how the other people’s points related to his topic. Will hit the nail on the head when he said Ashley had a very emotional topic of heart worms. She told of how heart worms arise and how dangerous and even deadly they can be and how to avoid this problem through shots that can be administered at your local veterinarian clinic. Her topic was very persuasive because people for the most part think of their dogs as being part of the family and nobody would want such a terrible thing to happen to them. Jessica’s speech on fast food pretty much hit home with me because I eat my fair share then some of fast food. I liked how she told about the number of calories in certain common fast food sandwiches, and I think she also did a much better job incorporating audience analysis into her persuasive speech. Her speech was well organized and she presented it very professionally.
Like I said earlier everyone did an outstanding job on the persuasive speeches and I hope the improvement continues into the third speech. It came to my attention that even if you did get two A’s on the last two speeches you still have to present the third and final speech. I was shocked when I found this out because I thought the third speech was used to revise the speech that you got the lowest grade on and the new grade would replace the old lower grade. I guess it doesn’t now and even if you did receive two A’s you have to come up with a new topic. I don’t know why or when all of this changed, but I wish everyone the best of luck with the third speech whether you just have to revise a previous one or do an entirely new one. Good luck again!
I think everyone did excellent on their persuasive speechs! They were much better than the informative ones everyone has definitly excelled at giving speeches.
some of the speeches i really enjoyed and thought were done really well were Jimmys on organ donation. It it close to home for me because my grandfather needed a liver and was put on the donor list but sadly didnt make it. Jimmy did a great job at using pathos and logos, so did Kristen she used a power point wich i thought helped make her presentation on weraing your seatbelt alot more persuasive, i often dont wear mine or i forget to but now i will!
Ashleys was another speech i thought was very well done I myself have cats that i love dearly and would never want to see them go through any of that. I even went out the next day and purchased heart worm prevention medication for them!
Brandon’s speech about the importance of budgeting was another very good topic to speak on i thought. As college students many of us may not know how to budget that well so learning the importance of it was very helpful.
Everyone has done great jobs and i look forward to the final speeches and the debates if we do those!
I'm sorry that this is late, I haven't had internet access for the past couple days and its been a pain.
I'd like to say that everyone's speeches were very awesome this time around. I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. Mike's speech was probably my favorite, especially considering how much he's improved from the very first speech. I really liked Kristin's speech as well. It helped me to realize why I always wear a seat belt and wish my family would do the same.
I'm very iffy about the final speech and having to do the same speech that I've already done. It just seems very redundant to me, especially since I didn't even like my informative topic. If I didn't like it, why force everyone to listen to the same stuff over again? The debate is still probably a better idea, but the only subject to come up is the election which I could care less about.
First off i would just like to say congrats to everyone for a doing a great job on the persuasive speeches! I really enjoyed listening to all of you and it brings me great pleasure to say that it seems like everyone is starting to look like "true" speakers. I feel that the imporvement from our first speeches has just been enormous. For those of you who have to do a final speech, just look at it as an opportunity to have another shot to polish your skills that much more! I am looking forward to listening to these much improved speeches.
After listening to the persuasive speeches this week i have noticed that there were areas that people really did better on, and i think that a lot of it had to do with our videos. I thought everyone did great, but there are three speeches that i would like to talk briefly about. Mike, kristin and kevin, i really thought you all did very well this week. Mike, you seemed very confident when you spoke this week and that was great to see! You were very organized and seemed very fluid when you talked. Now to Kristin. I thought your speech along with your powerpoint was very persuasive towards the audience. You did a great job of giving information while showing pictures on the slide shows that went right along with what you were saying. This was a great topic! Last i would like to complement Kevin. His speech on excersice was very well done. Although he might have exceeded the time limit, his speech was well prepared and well organized. You seemed passionate about your topic and that was a great way to pull your audience in. I also noticed that you only refered to you notecards, instead of reading off of them. That was a great improvement on your part.
I once again like to say that everyone did a fine job with their speeches this week. For those who have to speak again, good luck and I am looking forward to hearing from you! GOOD LUCK!
GREAT JOB EVERYONE. Yes, I agree with all of you that the persuasive speeches overall went quite well. You have improved tremendously from the early part of the semester. It is obvious that you've been slowly gaining the presentational skills that were the objectives of this class. Some of you are especially strong in delivery. You are maintaining good eye contact and are not depending too heavily on your notes - therefore, we as an audience feel that you are speaking with us instead of reading to us. Some of you are doing extremely well in the use of supports. I believe we could all sense the strong credibilit that this gives you as a speaker. The use of audience analysis was also improved upon. This is a must when speaking to audiences even in those cases when you cannot learn about your audience through a questionnaire. In a larger audience, you can, however, ask the sponsor of any event for some demographics about your audience. This is beneficial so that you can provide some sense of "feeling" your audience.
I am especially pleased with your assessment of the speeches and of the class in general. Although I believe you focus more on all the things that I may be doing wrong or at least hinting heavily on what you are not pleased about - I have tried in vain to hear your voices - and then to allow your voices to have some impact in the class. In doing so, I have agreed with you at times and have made significant changes in the course. I do hope in all fairness that you recognize this and that you appreciate it. I believe that we should always use criticism constructively. When I critique your speeches and you make improvements, this is beneficial. When you critique my actions, I make the decision to change the action or to explain it. So although I welcome all criticism as I believe it helps me improve my teaching and planning for future courses, I ask you also to evaluate what you think I've done well. In all of this, I do hope you know I've done my best. And that is all I can expect of you too. Have a great weekend.
First off, I am sorry my blog is late, I had a funeral this weekend for my uncle.
I would like to say Congratulations to everyone for doing an excellent job on the persuasive speeches.I think that everyone in the class is improving so much on everything. I think that everyone seems very professional with the topics that are being talked about. I thought that the topics that were chosen for the persuasive speeches were excellent. They were all topics that we all have to deal with in our life, like giving blood, donating organs, and even buckling up.
There are a lot of speeches that stick out in my head. I thought that Mike did a very nice job on his speech and seemed very professional about it. I think that having confidence about the topic you choose will definitely make it an even better speech. I liked how he ended his speech. It was a very creative way to do so.
Another speech that I liked was Brandons on budgeting. Everyone has problems budgeting at some point in their life, and I thought that Brandon really knew what he was talking about. It seemed from his past experiences he had to deal with bad budgeting and because of that , he wants to encourage everyone else to budget. I thought that the handout of the budget layout was very nice and it was a good touch to the speech. I myself do not really worry about budgeting but I am going to try to use the handout he gave to budget so I don't end up regretting not budgeting.
I also liked Ashley's speech about heart worms. I think that it is something that as a pet owner , people should be aware of. My family has 5 dogs and my mom takes care of the vet visits. When I saw her this weekend I told her to make sure they are all getting wormed. I think that the powerpoint put the problem more into perspective of what is happening if you don't worm them.
Also, I think that everyone is getting more creative with the speeches. I really liked how Will and Logan started their speeches. The attention getters were excellent. It was very creative and I think it definitely added a little touch to the two speeches.
I think that taking this class has definitely benefited me in several ways. I have given many speeches in the past few years, but this class has taught me how to prepare better speeches.I think that I am more organized because of it. I think that it is good practice for my years ahead in any public speech I will have to do.
Once again I think that Everyone did a great job on the speeches. I am looking forward to hearing the final speeches, and I wish everyone the best of luck on them!
This week we worked on impromptu speeches. This was quite a challange for me. My subject was music, and I really dont know that much about it, so I had to try and elaborate as much as I could. When I had the two minutes to go out in the hall and prepare my speech, I set it up like my structure sheet, and tried to come up with as much detail as possible, but when I got up in front of the class I totally forgot what I was going to say, and two minutes seemed to take forever while I was up there. I know that I lacked transitions and internal summeries in my speech. It was an experience I wont forget, and I am glad that this speech was for bonus. I was very impressed with the rest of the class on their good job with the impromptu speeches. Every did well with their topics, even if they really wern't to fimular with the topic. I have to say that we all had good time in class, becasue we all seemed to laugh, and be interested in one anothers speech. I give credit to us all in completing the speech becasue it by far wasn't very easy.
Also, this week I did my peer mentoring with Jessica. We worked hard on her speech, so her grade could greatly improve on her final speech. With her doing her informative speech again on breathing, we made sure she had a lot more detail. Her hand out that she worked on is much more informative, and it has pictures on it show the different poistions of the body and different ways to breath. Also, we worked on improving audience analysis, and note having to depend on note cards as much! Finally, we also worked on transitions. This was a big one becasue this is what a lot of people had trouble with, and I know that it is important for the speech to flow, so we did our best in changing it, and I know her grade will improve!
I just want to say good luck to everyone preparing for your final speech! I know that you all will do a good job!
For this weeks blog i want to talk about the impromptu speeches. The speeches were alot harder than i thought they would be. I thuoght it would be easier than it was. I figured that two minutes wasnt going to be that hard to talk about a subject but when you only have two minutes to put something together its a lot harder than you think. I was kinda surprised myself. However, the speeches were fun to do. I thinked them because you could just be yourself. You had to have some oragnization but for the most part it was just what you put together. The speeches were entertaing because you never knew what you were going to hear. Some people got pretty creative i was surprised but the speeches were good. I know i didnt fill up the whole two minutes and when i was done with my speech i had a hard time of trying to come up with other things to say about my subject. The subject i had was summer vacation. I had some facts to talk about but i didnt have enough.
Next i want to talk about the fimal speeches. For my final speech i am going to redo my infomative speech. I only got an 86 on it but i hope to improve that score. Danny was my mentor and he was a big big help when we met. He told me areas that i had to work on. The biggest areas was eye contact. I even felt my eye contact was weak but i am going to try and improve on that area in my speech. I just want to wish everyone who is giving a final speech good luck and i hoope we all can improve on our last grade.
Since this blog is about an open topic i would like to discuss the impromptu speeches. To clear up dr. pams comments at the beginning of the class i was the one who gave everyone a 9 out of 9. The reason i gave everyone a 9 out of 9 is because i felt given the circumstances everyone did quite well. with 2 minutes to create a speech on a topic selected at random i think everyone did quite well and deserved the credit because its not exactly an easy task to do. I know when i was sitting in the hallway prepping for mine those 2 minutes felt like 30 seconds and then the two minutes to give that speech felt like 30 minutes. i personally felt that everyone did quite well.
Now i would like to discuss that peer mentor set up that we did this week. I got assigned to Kevin and he and got all the little things figured out with my speech. as long as i can keep myself calm and not forget anything i feel i should be able to persuade everyone into recycling. I look forward to listening to some speeches and wish everyone the best of luck next week in doing so.
Have a nice weekend everyone.
Hey everyone, the semester is almost over! I want to talk about being a mentor to Jimmy. I had the pleasure of helping Jimmy impove his speech for next week. I feel like in the short amount of time we were able to meet, i feel like we got a lot accomplished. Jimmy felt confident from his first speech and was aware of the mistakes the he made. This made it easier for him to pick out certain areas to work on. We discuss the possibility of making new audience analysis questions. We really focused on his delivery and that he should only use his notecards as a reference and not read off of them. He was well organized and has added a few new things for the upcoming addition of his first speech. I know Jimmy will do just fine and im excited to hear how much better he's improved!
I also would like to mention the impromtu speeches. I had a really fun time doing these and i feel the rest of the class did as well. It was a day where we could have fun and enjoy each other while still having the opportunity to work on our orginization and speaking skills. It was tough to be the fist one chosen for the impromtu speeches because i didn't know what to expect, but i had fun doing it and really got to see how creative everyone is. I would like to end this week's blog by wishing good luck to everyone who is giving their speeches next week. I am looking forward to hearing them and I know that everyone will do awesome! GOOD LUCK!!!!!
hey class,
hope everyone had a good week of classes. Is it just me or does the workload increase dramatically towards the end of semester. in speech this week we performed impromtu speeches on monday. I wasn't sure what to expect from this project, it sounded like it was going to be more difficult than it was. luckily I was able to get a relatively easy topic to dicuss. I can't imagine what I would have talked about if I would have got the fashion topic. All in all I thought the exercise was entertaining and educational. I am sure at some point in our careers we will have to give a presentation on short notice and knowing the proper structure will be extremely important.
along with the impromtu speeches this week we also were given the oppurtunity to help our classmates wiht there final speeches. I thought this was a good idea because I find that I learn alot from other classmates because they put things in terms that I understand, and can relate to. I would like to close by wishing all of the speakers the best of luck on there speeches next week, and wish everyone a pleasant weekend.
Hey everyone! I hope your week went well, with the beautiful weather and everything, I hope it stays like this and doesn't get cold again! I think towards the end of the semester here it all seems to fly by it seems like it was just August! But most of us still have final papers to write and finals to take. Then we are free for a few months! At the begining of this class I thought it would be so stressful and hard! But im happy to say it wasn't it was actually pretty fun to see how nervous people were at first and then improve so much within just a speech or two! Everyone has done a great job! I look foward to seeing the final speeches and after that it looks like we're in the final stretch. I'm so excited for summer, and i hope everyone is going on a fun vacation! Good luck on your final speeches and all your other work for other classes! dont study too hard! :)
Hola fellow classmates. I want to first state how much entartainment I got out of the impromptu speeches we gave on Monday. I felt like everyone was very relaxed and laidback in trying to give those speeches.
So this week is about anything we want to talk about. Well I'm sure all of you know that gas prices have gone up, AGAIN!!! Ha, I bet my persuasive speech is really sounding good right about now. But, as we all know the prices aren't going to come down for a very very very long time. This really irritates me, because how on Earth are we supposed to be able to maintain a life if we can't even afford the gasoline to get there. It's getting pretty ridiculous and I don't see anyone trying to stop it. Sure there was a text going around about not buying gas on one day. I'm afraid to say that's not going to do anything. Companies will just benefit from the day before or the day after. If we're going to do anything about it we need to think of something fast or prices are going to be outrageous. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't want to have to start taking out money just to afford to fill up my tank every week.
As the semester is almost over, I feel like we got a lot accomplished in the class. From our first introductory speeches to our impromptu speeches, everyone is definitely improving and doing a great job. I was a little worried about the impromptu speeches at first, but I think it was a fun activity for the class to do.It was kinda hard to come up with what you wanted to say in such a short amount of time, but it was fun at the same time. I liked listening to what other people had to say about their topics. Some people were very creative with what they said.
I think that having the mentors will help to improve the quality of the speeches. I was always told that two heads are better than one. I think that this could apply to this situation. Something that one person may overlook, another one might catch. I think this is a very good way to make the speeches the best they can be.
I think that the best speeches will be given next week. I think that everyone is improving and since a lot of the speeches are just being improved, it will make them better because the speaker already knows what needs to be fixed with them.
Good Luck to everyone on the final speeches!
